If we're truly talking about "influential" videos on MTV, as in videos that actually influenced what other videos looked and felt like, then I probably would have moved Ah-Ha's "Take On Me" a little higher up the list. But whatever.

Can you imagine the firestorm if Madonna released the video for Like a Prayer today?

A whole video of Madonna dancing around a field of burning crosses and making out with Black Jesus.

It's enough material for Tucker Carlson for at least a week.

Well they have Smells Like Teen Spirit and Thriller, so you know this list at least isn't BS.

I think the list went chronologically.  As such with most of the videos from the 80's, I think it's a pretty decent list.  I'd argue taking off 2 of the last 3--Missy Elliott and OK, Go because not many people were watching videos by then.  MTV certainly wasn't playing them often.

OK, Go's treadmill video was kind of cool, but I don't know who it influenced.  Maybe Peloton?

Not so much for the video itself, but for the way in which it fused older rock and newer rap.

RUN DMC - Walk This Way (Official HD Video) ft. Aerosmith

There were all sorts of breakout/noteworthy videos that didn't make that list:
Metallica "One"
Michael Jackson "Black or White"
Run DMC/Aerosmith "Walk this Way"
MTV Unplugged videos, i.e. Eric Clapton

I guess I'm thinking about videos that shifted "popular" sounds or broke visual ground ("Black or White" using video morphing, for instance). "One" seemed to mark a crossover point where metal became more visible. "Walk this Way" kicked open the door for rap and rock to be a bit more accessible to different audiences. Unplugged stripped the flash and glam and put the raw, clean talent on display. There were other examples, of course. TFA covers a fair swath, but not all.

The most amazing thing about that video was how it singlehandedly re-launched Aerosmith's career. I was one of millions of oblivious young teens in America who "discovered" Steven Tyler when he burst through that wall.

I'd say Missy Elliott deserves to be on that list. MTV was on the decline then but still pretty popular, and almost every hip hop video that came out during that time used her aesthetic.

Ashes to Ashes" (David Bowie, 1980)

"The filming was interrupted at one point by an old man walking his dog, looking for driftwood. Mallet asked him if he wouldn't mind moving, and pointed out Bowie sitting outside the catering van. 'Do you know who this is?' he asked. Sharp as a tack, the old man responded with, 'Of course I do. It's some coont in a clown suit.' Sometime later, Bowie remembered, 'That was a huge moment for me. It put me back in my place and made me realise, "Yes, I'm just a coont in a clown suit."

Fair points, but not specific to the videos. Walk this way didn't need a video to break the boundaries it did for example.

They got the wrong GnR for a video list.

When you think of Welcome to the Jungle you don't picture Axl getting off a bus.  You hear a riff so sleazy that whatever you're wearing turns into a leather vest, and whatever you're drinking turns into a bottle of Mad Dog.

November Rain was the correct answer.  The music video that was so epic it murdered the entire genre.

I'll give some credit because most of the time with these lists, they'll end up with some song that marked a change in popular music but where the video wasn't much.  For the most part, the videos themselves here were important.  However, having said that, the exception here is "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which is an important song, but it didn't really change music videos, just changed what videos were on MTV.

Virtual Insanity does indeed belong on that list.

Any one of several OK Go vids should be on that list: This Too Shall Pass (either version), The One Moment, I Won't Let You Down, Obsession, Needing/Getting, White Knuckles, The Writing's on the Wall.  The idea of doing highly technical, resource intensive, mindblowing vids staffed by technical volunteers?  A band getting people to do work for exposure?  The irony is too delicious.
