The government should set up a national GoFundMe program and take automatic contributions as a percentage of everyone's income. Then they could arrange individual funding programs for each person depending on their particular medical needs.

It's their own damn fault. They should know that you shouldn't go out in public if you don't have adequate health insurance. Seriously, name me one country that will pay for your health care if you don't have private insurance. I dare you.

Mostly money. People in power money, so, give them your money. They need money.

France. My father just recovered from throat cancer. He spent two weeks in the hospital after several operations, one of them consisting of splitting his lower jaw open to access the part where they needed to scrape the tumors. Afterward, he had six weeks of daily radiation treatments (he avoided chemo, thank God !) that required two one-hour ambulance ride to bring him to the hospital.

What did my parents pay out of pockets ? 60 euros for the rental of a television for two weeks.

Want anything good? Get rid of Republicans. It's a shiat party with shiat ideas that shiat on citizens. And worse they are planning on taking over the entire country. Voting isn't working well enough (for a lot of reasons) but namely the shiat people in power write the shiat laws to keep those shiatty people in power. The executive branch can't or won't do anything. The shiatty judicial branch has jumped the shark. Congress is worthless and in two years will be worth than worthless.

I don't know how to get rid of Republicans but if you want anything good they gotta be erased from the playbook. Otherwise we are riding this hand basket to hell with the shiatty deplorables.

When you consider that 90.4 percent of Americans have health insurance, and the majority still need Go-Fund-Me to try to help pay for medical bills, you realize how screwed Americans are getting treated by the insurance racket.

The biggest argument against nationalizing health insurance is all the millions of insurance workers who would lose their jobs, but the way I see it, with world wide labor shortages, that is millions of people trapped in jobs that are not contributing to anything.  Let them all become Uber drivers.

If the GOP scum were at least the ones advocating for universal health care and bans on assault weapons, then there bulls**t message on abortion of life is so precious would at least be consistent.

The reason we do not have nice things is simple, the GOP exists. A party of (R)epugnant human scum for repugnant deplorable scum. We need another even deadlier pandemic to just wipe out 50% of the population, if only there was a virus that attacked deplorable trash.

Unfortunately there's a not insignificant portion of the country that will vote R straight down the ticket no matter what. That portion gets smaller every year, but then combine that with the GOP doing whatever they can to delegitimize elections both behind the scenes and in our courts, and you have a recipe for disaster. Not to say that it can't be turned around, but there's a huge swath of this country that are actively working against that happening.

Nationalizing healthcare would be such a massive cost savings that we could easily afford to pay for training to educate those insurance workers into other fields where they can become functional, contributing members of society instead and still have money to spare.

Bonus: you can also have private insurance in most of those countries (maybe all, I'm not bothered enough to research all of them, but I've had it in the UK and Spain at least). The difference is that private care is an add-on to the public system that will cover you either way, not a replacement, with the majority of people choosing it having it as an employment related bonus (so, you don't pay anything for it directly unless you use it, and then only pay for the extras not covered by the public system).

So, in the vastly more unlikely even you would be shot in one of those countries, you'd have the option of having all your care paid for, or paying a small premium to make your recovery more comfortable (the latter leaving you with a far smaller bill than the people in the article are likely facing).

What a sadly fitting end to the day of celebration of how "great" America is - a reminder that it's nothing of the sort for its citizens.

Hell, an ambulance ride alone can crush most people's finances if they don't have insurance. Still seems nuts to me that a police car or fire truck pulling up to help in an emergency are free but the emts will cost you $2k plus to give you a bandaid.

The worst part is if you phrased this as a pitch from a republican candidate to their base, they would immediately agree it's a great idea and wonder why democrats have never done anything to help people with Healthcare costs.

This is why gunowners should be required to purchase insurance - in the event that the "responsible gun owner" suddenly becomes "mass murderer", the victims and their families will be taken care of.  It's required for automobiles and they're generally less effective as a murder machine. If a mass shooting is sizeable enough it will bankrupt the insurance company, but that's just a win in a tragedy.

This sounds like hyperbole.

But only if you are comfortable enough not to notice that Republican political stances ruin lives and occasionally kill.

Millions of Americans have no access to healthcare.  Millions more get wallet-mugged every time they visit for an annual checkup.  (I my self learned the hard way that my new insurance doesn't actually cover my physical anymore despite claiming to pay 100%.  Don't cry for me, as I'm one of those comfortable people, but for someone who might be in trouble when getting a surprise bill for $300, that's a big deal.  And yeah, that's $300 out of my pocket for a 10-minute visit where I received no treatment, after I pay almost $2000 per month for my premiums.)

Many others suffer when learning that their insurance companies just don't feel like paying for a particular procedure.  My girlfriend experienced that after having some surgery a few years ago and learning after the fact that her insurance was leaving her holding the bag to the tune of about $30,000.  They "covered" the procedure, as promised in her insurance documents, but the company never promised they'd cover all of it.  They paid about $50.

And all of this is legal because Republicans don't care.

Oh, and welcome back, back alley abortions!  We haven't seen ya since 1973!  How many women do you plan to kill this year?

Of course, if I talk about every way Republicans have tried to kill or bankrupt me in the past few years alone, we'll be here all day, and I have to get back to my job so I can afford my $2000/month health insurance premiums.  I mean, we've got that whole deal where the king of the Republicans did everything possible to undermine the response to the pandemic.

And lost in the discussion is one of the first things that made me loathe TFG beyond his racist prattling and general buffoonery.  His efforts to roll back environmental protections in California would have killed many of us, in painful ways.  Not just "oh, maybe this'll have a bad effect."  No, killed.  Pumping the air full of garbage is a bad thing, and only Republicans seem not to understand this.

Also, we've got that looming climate disaster that's going to take millions of lives but that no one in America who votes red seems to care about.

They're garbage people, and what they inflict on the innocent makes your prison labor idea seem like sunshine and rainbows.

So there are between 2.6 and 3.2 million people employed as part of the health insurance industry.

Instead of losing that 'valuable' skill set, let's repurpose it! Let's pass universal healthcare, AND start requiring gun insurance. All those poor leeches can move to a new, exciting, (and most important) mandatory and lucrative market!

/I look forward to the inevitable gun nut telling everyone that insurance would infringe on their rights.
