Well the GOP seems to have successfully convinced the nation that when there is a tragedy, it is offensive to try to do anything to prevent another one.

I think we are only a few years from it being disrespectful for me to exercise and cut down on carbs if my mom dies from diabetes.

That's how the GOP playbook goes. Something bad happens that was preventable the entire time, and the GOP declares that topic to be political, and therefore beyond reproach.

Mass shootings? That's political.

Forcing women to give birth to their rapists babies? That's political.

Wearing masks or getting vaccinated to reduce covid infections? That's political.

People suffering and dying needlessly for any multitude of bad Republican policies? Well, guess what? That's political too. So you can't really talk about it.

Because if something has been hereby declared to be political, you just can't talk about it anymore or try to do anything about it. It's entered some kind of metaphysical no man's land where it must survive or die on its own merits, while repeatedly getting pinned down by Republicans whenever a motion is made to do something tangible about it.

All these women about to suffer and/or die because of Roe v. Wade getting overturned? Well, that's also political. Which means it doesn't matter if they suffer or die. The topic of all these future dead women has entered that sixth dimension where it can not be touched or mentioned. It's now political.

People dying in mass shootings? Well, that's just a political topic. It became political as soon as a bullet was fired and struck an innocent target. Can't do anything about it. Everyone's hands are tied. Because then we'd just be getting into a political disagreement, so let's talk about something else, shall we?

A Republican declaring a topic to be "political" serves the same purpose as the filibuster in the U.S. Senate. It doesn't mean anything more than Republicans aren't willing to discuss the topic at all, and they declare pretty much everything to be political so they never have to talk about it.

2022-07-06 12:15:50 AM
Maybe if something is "political" and you're in a job to change it, then shut up and do your job.

Oh, right, you never wanted to do anything because you're taking money from the same merchants of death that made sure this tragedy is just a recurring cost of doing business.

That's why we should just stop being nice and reporting it like we have...

"Another mass shooting today in America. We're the only country in the world with this problem, but don't mention that to a right-winger or they'll loser their marbles and start making threats. People should thank Republican politicians, and the Supreme Court, personally."

There are two arguments for owning a gun:

1) The Imaginary Hero - I need them to protect me and my family from tyranny/home invader.

No, you will not be a "good guy with a gun" and stop a tragedy/home invasion/tyrannical army. If your guns are stored properly, they won't do you much good in an emergency; if they aren't, you're more dangerous to yourself than the "bad guys," and in case of tyranny, individual contributors << organized resistance, so your personal arsenal is essentially useless (also, the US army has Predator drones).

2) The Sportsman - I'm a law abiding citizen and like to use them recreationally, why punish me?

Because your pew-pew toys aren't worth the cost of tens of thousands of lives each year. Get a new hobby.

It's worse than that. The GOP isn't really reliant on the gun industry for funding anyway; sure, gun pressure groups provide money, but it's a drop in the bucket.

But owing to a few decades where the GOP was reliant on that money, they successfully convinced about 40% of the population (which overwhelmingly constitutes their voting base) that the possession of high-powered, lethal weaponry is the single-greatest feature of the American way of life.

If it was just about the cynical pursuit of donations, you could theoretically exert pressure on their funding sources and get them to stop. Strangle the NRA, go after gun manufacturers for their complicity, that sort of thing. You should obviously do those anyway, but as with so many of its monsters, the GOP no longer has any control over this. Most younger Republican lawmakers, raised on this shiat, actually believe it. They aren't just cosplaying as fanatics; they are fanatics. They don't need a change in incentives, they need years of intensive therapy and deprogramming.

Which makes them all the more guilty.

They refused to self police. They refused to acknowledge the problem. They have now left the rest of society with only one answer after pursuing all available channels of relief to placate their murder.

And that is to take their guns away. Stop any and all future sales, make production with out an impossible to attain for the common citizen license illegal. Go after gun printers and ghost guns with voracity of child pornography. And every time they throw a temper tantrum. Remind them that they had a chance to do something about this earlier, and they instead opted to do nothing.

Well ya see it's because Republicans see it as saying we should ban McDonalds if your mom dies of diabetes.

Because you know, a madman held your mom down and shoved McFlurries down her throat for 20 years, but you can't blame the tool!

I mean it's just like we can't ban or deeply regulate cigarettes, tobacco is one of the original American crops and so it has a rich American history and is part of our immutable cultural legacy.  Likewise with alcohol.  There isn't a square inch of America where you can't walk into a store at midnight and walk out with as much booze as you care to carry, because freedom.  Restaurants and bars are all required to offer alcohol, and the right to consume it shall not be limited for any reason.

Oh wait.

NRA sure seems mobilized and a li'l defensive. That shooting must have really sucked for them by forcing them back to the office to formulate a media response. I mean, can you imagine a worse way spend your holiday? I mean, going to a hospital or morgue is bad, but imagine being pulled from a single malt and cigars with donors. Just jarring.

"Politics" is one of those words that Republicans have convinced people is always a bad word.  Politics is never anything good, it never means the dynamics between ideologies, or the processes of governance.  It's just all bad and if you do anything political, even if you're a politician, you're doing something bad.  Now, just call something political and it's the same as saying "that's farking the worst thing ever! how dare you!"
