They exist because idiots pay them.

If you pay them, and then post cutting edge snark about how much it sucks you had to pay them in a withering and viral post online, you still paid them. So you're a snarky idiot. Congrats. Enjoy your game.

And yet people compain about taxes for clean water and vaccines?

Raise taxes and fix the water system. Pump out more vaccines. This is evidence that the complaints are frivolous. Necessities of life come first.

Anyone who pays them should punch themselves in the dick for encouraging game developers to do more of this.

Yeah, wiping away the tears of the hurtful remarks on the internet with $100 bills means we're not going to see the end of this any time soon.

Which means DI will not go away until the last whale is beached, and 4 is either dead or will be a worse game as a result. As long as this method of revenue extraction is legal in most countries, or at least most wealthy ones, it will become increasingly common and risks bleeding outside of the mobile trash heap the longer it goes on. It's just too effective for any publisher to leave alone forever.

For comparison, a WoW sub is still $15/month. Assuming most don't go for the cosmetics in the shop (or just take the grind route to buying shop items, because that exists there,) and most don't grind hard enough to play on gold instead of dollars, they'd need a couple million persistent players to pull in a similar amount. I'm making the mistake of ignoring expenses for either, of course.

The sub model comes with keeping players interested. The gacha model just requires making players feel good for a moment when they get that BIS gear and then making them feel vaguely worse when the next thing comes out. If they have money, they'll spend it. If they don't, they'll probably stop playing and save you the load.

This.

No more "early access." No more pre-orders. No more microtransactions.

Also, the math says that's less than five bucks per download in the first 30 days. Let's see what that looks like every 30 days.

I wonder how much of this is the face of rising inequality? I mean, if 100 people have most of the money, they set the prices to those 100 people. Not the other 1000 who can't afford to keep them going anyway. Basically, are the whales that big now?

Wanted for questioning, eh?

2022-07-05 9:37:29 PM
While Diablo Immortal would have been relatively cheap to make, it's not obvious whether $49 million over a month is a lot of money or not. Diablo 3 did 4x that in sales in the first 24 hours after its release. It's also not obvious whether this trend will continue as people recover from the initial slowdown in progression and realize that it only gets worse from there.

I have been surprised at the extent of the pay-to-progress system. The game showers you with progression early on and holds off on the p2w offerings. It even conditions, via the UI, performing certain patterns to receive rewards that eventually lead into p2w rewards. P2W is introduced at the same time progression begins to slow and at extremely reasonable prices, to the point where I thought "Wow, that is a good deal". Though, of course, that leads into p2w at less reasonable prices. Then there's this whole "Immortals" thing which I suppose would be like the Who's Who of p2w customers.

Pretty much everything in the game gently manipulates you into spending money and it has been, frankly, hilarious to observe because it's not even subtle. I genuinely don't even know why I would pay to progress, as the gameplay has been similar throughout. If anything, it's gotten even more boring. The game basically plays itself and there's nothing obvious to work toward.

And let's be frank they kicked it off the cliff with the closure of Blizzard North and the departure of their main talent behind the series, David Brevick/Bill Roper/The Schaefer brothers.

The big thing that people buy is the rune that allows you to sell gems you get in rifts.

Eh, here's hoping for anyone who isn't fully boycotting ActiBlizz at this point, but if I were them, I'd be looking at that as a potential revenue siphon. Might not be, though. From what I've seen, Immortal looks pretty gnarly on a desktop so it could appeal solely to phone players.

It doesn't look bad on PC, it's UI is just entirely designed around mobile, and the controls are ... weird, for PC. I do like that you can literally put your phone to sleep and jump on your desktop though.

The equivalent of 10k of those 100$ chests? It's a worldwide game and people are not great at finding value sometimes.

I still play D3 from time to time with some buddies for new seasons. That was a well spent 50ish bucks.

This is how every mobile P2W game works. It's fun at first, then you have to pay for it to be fun, then the fun part is competing with other whales to pay more. The transition can be subtle if you're patient, but eventually the game will not be fun if you do not pay.

I think you underestimate the 'minority'. When 'Clash of Clans' was a big thing, a bunch of my friends (in their mid-30's) paid a LOT to advance; and I'll admit, I've bought skins for COD. I like the option, and 'battle pass' systems are a nice little extra boost to progression systems.

It's crazy how effective the system is, and that's why they continue to exist.

My favorite fact is South Park made an episode shiatting on microtransactions and then made a shiatty card game loaded with shiatty microtransactions full of pay to win.

Btw, I still play a smattering of ActiBlizz games. I either paid for those years ago, or sank some of my decade+ of hand-farmed WoW gold to convert to tokens and then store credits after it became increasingly iffy to support the company. I guess kudos to them for implementing a way to functionally boycott them while still enjoying what I can.

2022-07-06 12:29:35 AM
I know WHY they are doing it - it works and they're laughing all the way to the bank, but it sucks.

Personally I rather skip this kind of shiat altogether rather than reward. Never played plants vs zombies 2 thanks to their freemium model, despite buying and loving #1. I'd happily pay full price for a "pay once and own the damn thing" model, but that's not an option so they are getting nothing instead.

/And fair enough, I'll be getting nothing as well... But at least I won't be complicit in prolonging this shiat.

Until China or the U.S. starts talking about banning them ain't nothing gonna happen.  And if/when the U.S. starts talking about it the only thing that's gonna happen is that some members of congress will receive some generous campaign donations in order to sink any legislation that might limit or restrict their obscene cash flow.

I'm actually not sure how that would go down in China, or if the whole 'pay to win' scheme is even a thing over there.  I know they're really weird about certain things in video games, but I don't know their official stance on gambling.

Pretty much what I expected.  An utterly reprehensible company releases a game with utterly reprehensible exploitive monetization and people just say "shut up and take my money."

Goddamn, gamers.  You are the reason all the shiatty things in this industry happen.  Because you continue to give these evil bastards money.

Only an estimated 5-20% of players do microtrasactions (overall, not diablo specific), so even if the vast majority hate it, the minority that likes them is the one making the company all the money.

There are a dozen great dungeon crawlers coming out every year, made by small indie studios, with the same classic gameplay you remember, with none of the garbage modern trends. The ONLY difference is they're not called "Diablo". Stop being loyal to brands and stop rewarding AAA companies' ability to hoard intellectual property.

While I realize that microtransactions are predatory and evil, I have little sympathy for the people getting ripped off by this. It's a game, no one forced them to play it. There are plenty of other games that don't work to steal money from their players.

I bailed out on Activision/Blizzard more than a decade ago. My internet was down and I couldn't play WoW, so I figgered I'd play a comp stomp in Starcraft 2 WoL. It had been more than a month since I last fired the game up.

I couldn't play the single player mode of a game I "owned" because the game couldn't check in with BattleNet. It had a requirement that you do so at least once every 30 days. I couldn't even replay a story mission.

They haven't seen a dime from me since*. At that point I'd been an almost exclusively Blizzard kid going back to the first Warcraft game. Everything else that's come out about the company has further cemented that I will never do business with them again.

They are a garbage company that have joined the ranks of other corporations so remarkably shiatty they don't get my money, like Walmart, and Inspire Brands: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspire_Brands .

Walmart is obvious, though that started with poor service more than twenty years ago and has gotten further cemented as I learned more about what bastards they are.

Inspire is the farkwads who bragged about killing the minimum wage increase and fighting against labor law improvements.

Since Wiki has memory holed it and not included it on their page: https://www.newsweek.com/this-fast-food-giant-bragged-about-killing-15-minimum-wage-1579273

*Except for renting the WoW movie, which I actually enjoyed for the nostalgia.

Shrug. That's life today, and I like liking things, rather than maintaining a giant list of things I can't play because the company image might not be perfect.

I play lots of stuff others avoid, from controversial titles like Ready or Not, to games from EA, ActBliz etc
