Ahh, I remember when Reggie Roby would wear a watch to track the airtime his punted footballs got.  Dude could boot the thing.

Kickers are a totally different breed of people. They f*cking crazy.

You just roll with that if they are good because it's a totally unrecognized part of the game. A good punter can totally save your ass.

King wasn't the first punter blacklisted this past decade for distracting behavior(punters shouldn't get multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for easily preventable bullshiat, enough that Del Rio was forced to address it in press conferences).  Kluwe got the axe during his prime years when he was in the upper tier of active kickers as well(and Kluwe is white).  Punters are at the bottom of the list as far as tolerance for behavior undesirable by the team goes.  It's not fair, but punters don't put butts in seats or points on the board, and they have little salary leverage.

Didn't know he was on the Oilers.  I only remember him from his time with the Dolphins, but now and then the commentators would joke about having to take a commercial break (or something similar) when he kicked because of how long the ball stayed in the air.

I don't think we should be citing Jack Del Rio as evidence that this wasn't racially motivated.

Or really for anything.

I think, in principle, you are correct...but TBH, a great punter can actually win games for a team. If he can consistently put the opposing inside their own 10 yard line, as an owner, I'd say "He stays with this team." There are not that many great punters in the NFL and the position should be be evaluated on not distance, per se, but kicks inside the opponents' 10, IMO. Not to mention giving the ball the kind of spin that makes it hard for some returners to catch.

It was ultimately Gruden who axed him because he thought he was too divisive (Sure, Jon...) I think Johnny Townsend is a dang finer punter but King had some throwback Raider swagger.

From the same special teams coordinator who installed Home Run Throwback.

The year the Panthers went to the Super Bowl with Delhomme, our punter Todd Sauerbrun did the same thing.  Then two years later he popped for PEDs.  I guess the dude had roid rage.

Nobody thinks they need a good punter until they get a bad one.

Yeah, Tress Way was the best thing about the Washington team for quite a few years.
