My best buddy was stationed at Edwards end of the 90s told me how Chuck got himself uninvited to the Officers Club and everywhere else because of his refusal to knock it off with the n-word jokes, among other things. Yeager was an exceptional pilot but a common man of his times in all other ways.

So many so-called American heroes were racist trash.

and even at the end of their lives, like Chuck, they have to find ways to belittle the people they didn't think were "as" human.

Maybe they were afraid that he would get mixed up with Ed White?

No, we've had a few, one even died with the Challenger, it's just that this guy was going to be one of the first, one of the "right stuff" group to go to the moon... except Yeager hated him and had his classmates in the program shun and isolate him.  Possibly for being handpicked by civilian authority instead of military, but also likely racism.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about Chuck Yeager's behavior as an insufferable asshole.

The Air Force had its own program parallel to NASA's, that would have involved a possible space station and for which they had selected astronaut candidates including some would-have-been black astronauts.  But the whole program was axed.

This was mission control in Houston for Apollo 11, July 1969.
If you look closely you will see one woman in the room, center of the shot. Her name was Joann Morgan.
Everyone else is a white male.
No surprise that there were no Black astronauts that made it into space until 1983.

Ah, gotcha', thanks! It's odd that TFA didn't cover that because I totally read it and not just the headline.

Yeager was an asshole. Those I know who worked with him all said as much. I'll readily believe he was also a racist.

People hate it when someone acts like they are better than everyone else, especially when they are deeply flawed. It's even worse when they actually are, in whatever limited sense. His accomplishments are singular, you can attempt to demean them, or him, but success will be limited.

Aerospace is particularly comfortable with the idea that great people are not necessarily admirable people, outside their area of greatness. Its worth applying elsewhere. Lennon can be an awful person and a transcendent musician. MLK can be an unrepentant serial philanderer and a great civil rights leader.

That's not a "common" man of his times. That's a racists.
