When someone works with a criminal organization and then has a problem with the way the criminals treat them in the criminal foreign dictatorship it is  not really the President's problem to solve. Griner knew or should have known working in Russia was at her own risk

She has to fight a Demogorgon from the Upside Down if she wants to earn her freedom from a Russian gulag.

She got popped for a Delta-8 vape pen.

Wow, so much illegality. So much working with criminal groups.

Doing any work or business with anyone in Russia is being working with criminals. The President doesn't get involved when Americans are sent to prison for drug offenses in other countries and there is even less reason to get involved with Griner. She bought the ticket and now gets the ride. Hopefully she is released at some point in time but she brought her issues on herself.

AFTER the ukraine shiat started. Anyone who had a brain cell would have realized being american in russia with all that was just begging to be arrested. I do feel bad for the situation shes in, but only in the sense that you feel bad for a kid who is on the ground crying that their nose hurts after running full tilt into a glass door

The problem is we aren't trading an arms dealer for a basketball player. People who go to places like Russia, China, North Korea, etc are on their own if the hostile government decides it wants to stick them in prison. There isn't much we can do to get them free.

I'm sure the Internet Research Bureau in War Torn Russia had nothing to say about how this letter would speed up release of a favorite cold war sport.

Brittney Griner was allowed to write a letter to Biden because Putin knows the US rightwing traitors can spin her continued captivity as Biden's failure (and a lot of the media who should not be are being useful idiots in this).

She chose to work in a criminal dictatorship even though travel warnings recommended otherwise.  The pen itself wasn't the issue, the cartridge contents were.

Like many other entitled individuals, seem to believe the US Constitution follows them wherever they go.  And her wife doesn't seem to understand the government is working on her behalf, but her return is not and should not be priority 1.

American Trevor Reed, a US citizen and former Marine who had been detained in Russia since 2019, is back in the United States, his mother Paula Reed tweeted early Thursday. Reed was released in a prisoner swap Wednesday...
The release ended a nearly three-year ordeal for Reed, who was sentenced to nine years in prison in July 2020 for endangering the "life and health" of Russian police officers in an altercation...
His release came after months of effort by the US government, officials said, and was particularly urgent given concerns about Reed's health. It was ultimately secured through a prisoner swap for Russian citizen Konstantin Yaroshenko...
Reed's release was the result of "months and months of hard careful work across the US government" on the matter, a senior administration official said...

I sympathize with Griner's plight. But how is her arrest for breaking Russian law different than the 200k or so non-Americans sitting in American jails for breaking American law?

I like getting high but you kind of have to leave it at home when travelling to foreign countries.

Her situation sucks but is it a national priority? Probably not.

She'll get out. Eventually.

Because we don't have to send a Navy Seal Team in to break anybody out here in America.

I chew gum in the states. I would not even take any on a trip to Singapore. Not knowing what is going on in the world is the fault of the person who gets caught up in the rules of the country they are going to.

Sucks to be her, but she should have known what was up before going. Thinking all countries are the same as the US just means you are an idiot. Thinking that Biden can do anything about some putin-based game means you are an even bigger idiot.

My old friend is Canadian Michael Kovrig - one of the two-Michaels that were detained by China for a couple of years (and now released). Griner is lucky to be able to send a letter, let alone anything else.

Unless there is a prisoner swap Griner should expect to be in Russia for some time.

/basically, she a political pawn, like Kovrig was.

Yeah I feel sympathy for her being a pawn in a larger game. One of the compelling reasons not to visit Russia as an American right now is that following the rules probably isn't a deterrent to the Russians grabbing you as collateral to negotiate with on made up charges.

I don't think her release should be a super high priority for us right now and people should obviously see this as a lesson on why not to visit countries we are fighting proxy wars with but still it's an unfortunate situation.

Everything in Russia is a criminal group. I can't stress this enough, literally Everything. There is always a reason to arrest just about anyone, the laws and the structure of enforcement is intentionally set up that way. If you don't want to get arrested you need to not play the game. She went there as an American, she didn't understand the rules, they found it convenient to arrest her for something, now she is a pawn they want to play in geopolitics. That's all there is to it

I notice it doesn't say "Joe Biden will stop everything he personally does in order to console the fee fees of sports ball person."

And look at the turnaround time for Trevor. I guess she'd either start setting up camp or she'd better call Jesse Jackson to get her out.

FWIW I fully believe Griner had a CBD vape pen on her. It's still a shiatty, opportunistic prosecution meant to stick it to the US.

This is why traveling to scuzzy dictatorships is generally a bad idea. Don't break the laws there, but also you don't know the laws because you don't live there. And enforcement will be capricious & draconian. But fair won't matter to you when you lose 5 years of your life in a Russian prison.

Brittney Griner was really stupid to bring the vape cartridges with cannabis to Russia. It's illegal there and their judicial system is corrupt. She gave the Russian authorities a reason to arrest her so they did. Russia isn't alone in being a place on Earth where you're stupid to do anything that can get you noticed by their legal system. Many places like making examples of foreigners who break their laws.

If I were in Griner's wife's shoes, I would probably be emotionally distraught and grasping at any chance, no matter how small, I had to get my wife home. I don't really blame her, even if what she is doing isn't really that useful. It's painful to see someone you love go through something like this.

She got arrested right before Russia invaded Ukraine. She's a political pawn who put herself in that situation by being in Russia. It would be like working in North Korea and then being so surprised that they picked you up one day and threw you in jail. If you're going to operate in unstable regions, then prepare for instability.

Quite possible, but don't go discounting stupidity. Lots of stupid people think they can get away with shiat all the time, even though luck runs to zero for everyone eventually.

All you have to do is watch that cheesy reality show where UK border agents were arresting people for illegal coontaxed) cigarettes.

I'd say it was moreso of not trying to get away with something, but her just not understanding that Delta 8 is treated differently in other countries. It's completely legal here in the US. You can even send it thru the mail as well as take in onboard airplanes.

Doesn't mean she isn't being used as a pawn in Russian politics. Because she is.

Cannabis isn't even addictive.  Seems like you might want to chill on finding ways high in a country like Russia, especially when you're that high profile a target.
