Came here for this.

I don't mind someone making that choice in their diet. I just don't want to constantly be told about their diet.

I've known plenty of vegetarians, and the only time their food preferences would come up, is if we were going out to get food.
But vegans are food evangelicals.

There's a Slutty Vegan about a mile from where I'm working right now; it's on my way home. I've heard really good things about it, just haven't had the time to stop in.

This. If you didn't go out to eat with the vegetarian I know you'd never know he was one.

That's why I have many vegetarian friends, but no vegans.  It's a dealbreaker for me.

They have a line around the block, but I'm not very interested in waiting in line for any kind of food.  Same reason I've never gone to Hattie B's.

Thankfully the flesh-industrial complex never shoves its views on what should constitute food down people's throats. People just quietly get to decide their own diets without having to deal with constant carnist propaganda.

Uhhhh, are you NOT under the impression at least half of food tab is either telling someone "try this food or technique, it's GOOD!" Or about telling someone "the way YOU want to cook or eat sucks!"

Therefore, since pretty much all VOCAL vegans are the evangelicals of the world of eating styles, they become irresistible to dunk on?

Literally everyone on this tab is a food evangelist. Every one, or otherwise they'd be over shouting at each other on the pol tab. It's the nature of food, and the nature of humans. (Try getting in the middle of an argument over whether gas is better than charcoal for grilling, or whether potato salad should have raisins, or seafood pasta should ever be served with cheese, or whether pizza is better in Chicago or New York or Providence.)

But, for reasons I entirely don't understand, the shouting about vegans is so much louder. I don't give a fark what you eat, and I'm not a vegan, but for the love of all that's holy, I wish the anti-vegans would shut the fark up.

this is incorrect. fuff is a DEEPLY committed food-neutralist.

i personally don't like the texture of grits and oatmeal much, i don't mind if you like them. i quit the Pizza Wars last week. the "raisins in the tater salad" is literally a running joke, it comes from a SNL sketch with chadwick boseman. i've never seen ANYONE care about if you want cheese on your seafood pasta.......

everyone here has food preferences (other than fuff, i suppose!), that doesn't make them evangelical about it every day.

one of the definitions of evangelical is: a zealous or militant advocate of something, someone who seems to be on a crusade to recruit others to their way of thinking.

this DOES describe most vegans who choose to be VOCAL about it. they believe they've made an ethical and/or environmental choice that is THE correct choice. and they WANT to tell you why they are correct.

that's not an eating style, it's a total lifestyle choice, and often comes off like a religion they belong to.

this makes them MUCH more fun to dunk on than people who just like chicago pizza (and know it has more than ONE style in chicago)......

do you understand?

i'm 42 years old. my first friend to become a dedicated vegan (she lasted 6 years before actual health issues forced her to modify it) started eating that way in 1997. she was the young and passionate "ethical vegan" type. no animal products of any kind, didn't think humans should keep pets.

the next serious one was an old friend who became a "summer fling" in 2002. he was an "environmental" vegan, not an animal rights zealot, and he'd eat a a few eggs a month "when it felt needed" and we were young and poor. he's since been long married, with kids, to an australian woman in australia, he abandoned it as a strict lifestyle when he emigrated there.

the truth is you HAVE NO IDEA who i know or don't know in the 20 years of my life since.

BUT, if you've never, ever met a single vegan who was "preachy" about it, i totally doubt you actually knew any.

just like i now doubt your level of defensiveness about them truly means "i'm not a vegan, but....."

kind of a weird hill for you to die on.

uhhhh, you have NO IDEA who you're yelling at, do you?

you seem a lil' agro for food tab, today.

and wanna know something funny? while you're freaking out here about how "mean" this community is to vegans, there's a whole different thread above where people are talking tofu. asking meaningful questions like if the vegetarian subby is ovo-lacto and if they allow fish sauce, a bunch of people you're mad at in this one are in it.

YOU, conspicuously, are NOT.....

way for you to support diverse eating choices. so much honesty!

where did they say "soy boy?" could just be concerned about your dietary health! we talk FOOD here.....even the vitamins heavy drinkers ought not neglect. like literally look down a few threads to yesterday.

toddism: I've had it.  IT IS AWESOME!.

I would try that.

In not at all related news, I tried vegan tzatziki from Trade Joe's the other day and I think I like it more than their regular one. It's creamier and has smaller chop on the cucumbers (TJ's regular tzatziki is CHONKY).

i would ALSO try it. if i were in town with $15 for a burger and fries.......

i'm STILL suspicious that a single melty and yum "vegan cheese" for burgers exists on earth. and i've HAD "vegan shrimp" -they are too bouncy, too bland, and all-around not very good.

animal color: drjekel_mrhyde: I not vegan, but I support her getting African Americans in the south to get something besides fried and greasy shiat.

Jesus, dude. I'm surprised you didn't mention fried chicken and chitlins. Please go racist someplace else.

Did Fark take down my profile pic for a minute?

Nahh, they just didn't even look, OR (i bet) remember anything you've ever written here, Chicago food dude!

I, however, did. I'm a white chick from the western burbs. Lived in 3+ neighborhood of the city proper spread over 5 years, from Humboldt Park by the Puerto Rico flag sculpture over the street, to Ukrainian village, to a place off Diversey full of middle eastern, and central american restaurants, and Michoacán Mexican carnicerias and ice cream shops, plus one year in Lincoln Park 5 years earlier.....

Still took YOU to tell me what "mild sauce" is.

I have a feeling that person is more interested in talking than listening.

😜

True. But you can click anyone on any browser and at least SEE what they opted to stick in their profile, if anything.

Up to you if you think it's more than a fark persona.

Mostly, I just can't stand bullies.

animal color: NakedDrummer: are you malnourished or something?  just try search the intertubes for vegan protesters and see how much pops up.  then try and find a video of insane people storming a propane store yelling "charcoal charcoal" at all the customers.

Why don't you slap around the "soy boy" epithet, you carnivorous loon.
