I Can't Drive 55 isn't pouring out royalties?

Booze is always a moneymaker. Licensing the Cabo Wabo name probably pulls millions a year. Jimmy Buffett did the same thing. And Dolly Parton. And, and, and...

8 year old me thought "I Can't Drive 55" was the greatest song and video ever made.

DLR's sweat is a better tequila than Cabo Wabo.

Honestly gotta respect the guy... When you can make gobs of money doing something you love and it's successful? Most of those things fail where a famous guy tries to do a restaurant or something... Usually because the management robs them blind or is totally stupid...

Glad it worked for him.

I think he sold 90% of Cabo Wabo years ago. He got a huge check, which i assume was invested mostly wisely, and 10% future profits on the booze... not sure about the restaurants...

I never understood the animal cruelty and I Can't Drive 55. Like why would they lock his ass up? Shouldn't Animal Control have gotten involved?

Sammy and Dan Akroyd. Both goofy bastards who suddenly get dead serious when they talk about their liquor brands, it's hilarious. At least Crystal Skull Vodka has a cool bottle.

Cabo isn't my favorite tequila, that honor goes to Avion.

And 55 isn't my favorite Van Halen song, that honor goes to I'll Wait.  I probably lean Van Roth over Van Hager for most of their songs.

Lulz.

Cabo Wabo is decent, but IMHO it tasted much better when I was in college (late 90s/early 00s).  Plus, the blue bottles for the reposado looked so much better.

Also:

Van Halen has better songs with Diamond Dave, but I would rather hang out with Sammy.

But it's the World's Finest. And Super. And Premium!

God, even the tag lines on his vodka bottles sound desperate and needy.

I have a bottle autographed by Akroyd.

A friend of mine used to work for an alcohol distributor, and was able to get one for me at an employee-only event.  TBH, I need to declutter and I am tempted to drink it and give the bottle away....it can't be worth that much.

/Recently finished my autographed bottle of Ron Jeremy's rum.
//Had him sign it when he did an event at a local liquor store in 2012.
///Didn't want to hang onto it after his rape conviction.

Never buy booze from a nondrinker. Or anything from TFG, in general.

He sold 80% for $80 million.  And the cost of living in Cabo is shockingly low (according to my tour bus driver on my honeymoon 3 years ago).

Plus Sammy sold millions of albums when albums still made money.  I met Lemmy from Motorhead once and he told me the three songs he wrote with Ozzy made him more money than his entire Motorhead discography, just to add some context.

Whoooooole lotta "this" here. The songs from the first few albums are definitely superior to what Eddie and Alex decided to write while Sammy was in the band, but Sammy is a drastically better musician and human being (aside: Humans Being is a great song) than Dave.

Yes cool bottle, and marketing is the name of the game and draws people in. But once you actually open the bottle---let's just say repeat customers and word of mouth also help drive the brand and the vodak isn't pulling many repeat customers...

Was Hellraiser one of them? There was a music video for it for the Hellraiser 3 soundtrack. I think Pinhead was in it and everything.

I thought that was a fever dream or something. I swear that video with pinhead existed. But now I can only find the animated Ozzy & Lemmy version. Both wrote it, both recorded it with their respective bands, Motörhead's is better to me.

beezeltown: I Can't Drive 55 isn't pouring out royalties?

It seems positively quaint now.  Of the several thousand miles of highway driving I've done in the last year, maybe a couple hundred, max, were miles where the speed limit was 55.  It's now mostly 65, with 75+ in rural areas, and some urban sections that are 45-50 (assuming you're moving at all).

Maybe it's not a song of defiance anymore, but rather a song by a wistful older driver expressing nostalgia for the good old days of slower-paced auto travel.

I saw Van Halen a very long time ago and I think Sammy changed it to 65.

Hagar was a hot property in the mid-70s after he left Montrose and struck out on his own.   It didn't last long, but he was very popular on tour.  He was always a better guitarist than Ronnie and everyone knew it.   He just couldn't hold a band together on his own.

Hellraiser, Desire, Mama I'm Coming Home.  A little Google fact-check shows that he also cowrote See You on the Other Side, and I Don't Wanna Change The World, which I didn't know until just now.

The opening minute, you can hear the infectious joy of the Van Halen brothers jamming together. Throw in Mikey's bass, and it's such a fun instrumental. Sammy's singing is so raw and pure, with a voice break near the end, that it's damn near impossible for me to think of anything I like more from the first two Van Hagar albums.
