The worst part of the post-pandemic era is going to be the "overcorrection." People who were previously trying to make the world a better place had to live in a more limited way for a year or two, and now we see the whiplash effect. Drive further and more often. Buy more stuff. More plastic in the ocean. Eat more animal flesh. Fark the world, because I might have to stay inside again one day and it's not fair, so better do everything I ever wanted right now.

We are a society of children.

That certainly accounts for last night's ... events.

So those are not actually in any of the math things used for predictions. We have no idea how many have already formed, and the worse part is that the permafrost under the ocean is also melting, but those sinkholes are farking massive (city block size)

If you were wondering if we could stop climate change, the answer is no. We already went well past the point of no return

Concrete Donkey: If you were wondering if we could stop climate change, the answer is no. We already went well past the point of no return

Yep, and it's one of those things a lot of people don't want to believe.  The average temperature has increased "only" 1C in the last (almost) 150 years, and that's even after GHG concentrations have continued to increase.  The climate is incredibly slow to warm, and just as incredibly slow to cool.  It was probably too late to avert the coming catastrophe 20 years ago (and I read an essay by an environmental scientist about a year ago that said essentially that).  40 years ago, when I was learning about climate change in school?  Maybe.

Thinking we can avert it now is like Wile E Coyote flying off a cliff and thinking he can fly if he flaps his arms fast enough.
