Cube rule of food. Location of the starches are on 3 sides of the food, therefore a hot dog is a taco.

No debate. It's easy. A sandwich has two cut faces of bread facing each other with a filling therebetween.
hot dog: yes
taco: no

A key part of the original invention (which was pre-dated by food being wrapped in bread such as pita or tortillas) is that a drunken gambler asked for his meat to be handed to him between two slices of bread. There just have been a knife, or similar, cutting through bread, and then some filling placed therein.

Defining two slices as a sandwich is silly when you can wrap something in a piece of bread then it's an obvious sandwich, and a sub roll is a sandwich. I truly believe as long as bread makes non finger food , finger food, then it qualifies as a sandwich. Pita or tortilla, Oreo, ice cream etc is not bread although it may be starchy, this does not qualify.

The sadwiching action is what makes a sandwich a sandwich. Open-face sandwiches are sandwiches because gravity sandwiches the contents agains the bread. All other items that require the contents to be squeezed in order to preserve structural integrity are sandwiches. Pizza, where the toppings are attached by cheese, is not a sandwich. A given slice might qualify as an open-faced sandwich, but it's important in this case to note that that pizza is poorly-made. (Deep-dish pizza, where that's a given, instead hearkens to pizza's nature as pie.) Because a hotdog oriented properly is held in place by gravity and the side pressure of the bread, it is NOT a sandwich. We might invent a category of double sandwich to describe it, but might as well class it as an open-sided burrito. This sandwich definition refers to the lineage of the sandwich as well, directly from the Earl. All conceptual sandwiches are derived from his example.

It's not a question of culinary composition, science, mathematical least common denominator, or geometry, it's farking vocabulary, innit?

We call a sandwich a sandwich so that we know what to expect when someone else calls something a sandwich. A sandwich, a burger, a hot dog, a taco, these are all different things. You know how we know they are different? Because we have different words for them! That's why we call them different things! When you ask a seven year old to identify a sandwich, they're not going to point out a hot dog, unless they had dumbass parents who spent way too much time arguing about points of congruence.

Why is an "open-face sandwich" a sandwich? It's not a sandwich, that's why it's a big ginormous phrase to indicate some dumb chef started an idiocy by thinking he was avante garde and nouveau by not putting on the other slice of bread and creating a partial deconstructed dish. So we use a big long name to identify it, instead of just calling it 'a sandwich'.

Meanwhile, there are better uses for hot dogs than throwing them at cops.

Did it finally occur to Farkers that the farking hotdog ketchup hate was made popular by the worst farking portrayal of a cop ever put to screen played by a crazy NRA gun nut and maybe we shouldn't be taking our cultural cues from him?

And then we have the open-face sandwich, which is just sandwich stuff piled on a single slice of bread, on a plate. Take the same stuff, and pile it onto a crispy circular corn shell, and it is a tostada. (But don't put a hotdog on either, that's just wrong.)

So: Is a tostada an open-face taco, or an open-face sandwich? Fight!

Extra Virgin Geek Olive Oil: You know what I realized?

Here we have a hotdog thread and not one comment about ketchup...

Did it finally occur to Farkers that the farking hotdog ketchup hate was made popular by the worst farking portrayal of a cop ever put to screen played by a crazy NRA gun nut and maybe we shouldn't be taking our cultural cues from him?

Condiments in general are weird. Mayonnaise is conceptually disgusting, but it is tasty.

Yellow mustard is the one I don't get. It's too overpowering, unless it's a preztle or a corn dog.

What are Oreos doing in there?

Sandwich cookie? I dunno, they have a choco taco in there too.
If you look, they also include taking two pieces of pizza and smushing them together makes a sandwich. Which I guess it does. So, I mean, it's kind of hard to argue when their definition seems to be pretty broad.
