Farking religion. How a social construct is used to control people.

They are, in many ways. By running the hospitals, they dictate services available in those hospitals. And, if you are in a location with one hospital, and no means to travel, you are stuck with it.

They started this well before THIS decision, however. They had these shenanigans going in the early 90s, when I was a teen.

Which priests will they assign to the children's wards? Until they take care of that issue, the Catholic Church can Fark off. They have no moral standing in society.

I had a coonthlic ob/gym remove my IUD (bad side effects) and *then* tell me she didn't subscribe birth control. I'd have to go to her partner, a Jewish guy, to get it, so their office could bill twice. Of course, in some Jewish sects, unrelated men and women can't touch. I don't know how they worked around that one because I went to a different practice rather than deal with that scam.

Losing the fight on abortion is the biggest policy failure the Dems have had in the past 40 years and Biden just doesn't think it's a big deal.
Republicans had trigger laws ready to go for when abortion was finally outlawed - why didn't the Dems have something similar in place?
I don't think it's controversial to ask why the Dems weren't prepared. Gods know they had plenty of warnings.

Eh.  Really it's us failing here.

A country should provide for its citizens' needs without having to rely on non-profit religious institutions to do the job.

The Brits nationalized healthcare in the farking 1940s. They also freed slaves long before the US and have had no issues with women having bodily autonomy. The great experiment is over and we should have stuck with the crown.

Would they have been able to do those things with a puritanical territory with 5x their population hanging around their neck? Just a thought experiment, but just like if the US let TX and the Deep South go on their own 50 years ago we'd probably have gotten a lot more accomplished since then. They'd be murdering each other over pi being equal to three while the civilized remains worked on universal healthcare, tax-funded higher education, maternal/paternal leave of 1 year, etc.

Some women are being denied tubal ligations for the same reasons given to me 40 years ago.
It took me from age 21 to 29 to accomplish that, being turned down in a lot of places. "You're too young" (I'm in my reproductive years!) "You're not married" (some nameless faceless man who may or may never exist has more say than I do?!!) "You don't have any kids" (that's the f*cking point, doc) "You might regret it, I've had former patients come back and tell me I ruined their lives, usually after a second pending marriage where the guy wanted kids" (you had nothing to do with their decision and you know it).

Pretty much begged the doc who finally did it by telling him I'd already had an abortion, please don't stand in my way of trying to avoid another. He was like "Wow. I feel like I should do it right this second."

I was 29, and in a rather humourous twist of fate, had early natural menopause at age 32. Just stopped one day and that was that, no side effects, got flashes, etc.
Lucky

The pope is supposed to speak for god, according to their silly beliefs.

I suppose they could march into the Vatican, grab the pope by the collar and say something like:

"Listen here, pal, you tell your boss from me that..."

Yeah, it seriously sucks for women seeking to be sterilised. I had some trouble even as a man, in Canada, so I can only imagine how much worse it can be for American women if they don't catch a lucky break with a doctor.

It is beyond infuriating to be told you don't actually know what you, yourself, want.

I was aware of it back in 2005 when I worked for a place that was a Catholic-owned joint venture of St. Vincent's (Now Ascension) and St. Francis. Women who wanted to get a tubal ligation after delivering had to make a separate appointment at a non-Catholic facility once they had recovered from having C-Sections. It simply wasn't allowed, and HMOs didn't want to give pre-auths to go out-of-network for Labor and Delivery so patients could have it done while still anesthetized.

It's brutal - and where we live now all we have access to are 2 Catholic owned hospitals.

I was sure. As a kid when I played with Barbie dolls, she never married Ken. I never played house with dolls at all. Don't get me wrong, I like kids, I love having a niece and nephew who I watched grow up. I just knew I didn't want kids of my own. And there are so many more reasons people today are choosing to not have kids.

Doctors need to get onboard now that we've been screwed on abortion. There was a march in Washington in the '80s to reinforce that the nation wanted Row v Wade. I'd had my tubes tied by then but I went because it was important. Especially important to me because of securing that right for the little niece and nephew.

For the last 30 years
Republicans let's outlaw abortion and if you don't agree STFUAGTFO
Democrats we need to keep abortion safe, legal and rare and if you are Pro Life you can still be a Democrat
Also Democrats you want to take Federal funding away from poor women who need abortion, yeah that's okay Planned Parenthood or someone can step up and help them
Also Democrats you want to make late term abortions illegal but you'll include some vague language about an exclusion for the health of the mother, yeah that sounds okay it might make it hard for Lindasue in Montana to get an abortion but a Santorum in Pennsylvania will be able to get an abortion

I really hate the now, here, people won't be able to speak freely about having had an abortion or be sterilized, depending on what state they're in, among other reasons. I suspect those frank conversations help people who aren't sure what they'd do see many sides of the issues, and helps them decide.

Hell Poodle: huma474: Oh dear, another attempt to say that bigotry is OK as only as its against Catholics.

So you took a look at all the piles of dead kids in Ireland and Canada (and probably the US but that investigation is ongoing), organized coverup of thousands of pedophile priests and nuns, and the church's mass organization to gut human rights, and you went "cool by me, I'm totally fine sticking with this church".

A lot of people are willing to set aside morals in the defense of their religion.
