Mall owners got upset with teenagers and worked on getting rid of them starting in the mid-90s. Problem is those kids were the malls' best customers, dropped off at the mall with their parents' credit card which was cheaper than a babysitter apparently.

When I was a kid going to the theater was an all day job. In at 10am and out around 5pm or 6pm. It was like daycare, sort of. Movies and serials. It gave the parents a break from us.

And yeah, we were really obnoxious but there were no adults in the theater, They knew better than to show up. It was designed for kids only. The adults came for the later adult movies.

One of the best shows was they were showing a doctor operating on a gorilla on the screen and the lights went out. Pitch black with lots of screams. The lights came on and now there was a live doctor and gorilla. The gorilla ran up and down the aisle then back to the stage. Lights out again and the movie came back on. It was cool and nightmare fuel for some.

The lights out part was to move the operating table on/off the stage.

Impossible.

I was assured by many, many adults growing up that when you wear nice clothes your personality changes and you become a docile well-behaved kid and banning certain clothes and/or forcing us to wear uniforms every day was because of that, had nothing to do with them being authoritarian dickwads.

So I don't see how any of these well-dressed teens can possibly be disruptive.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

Yeah, these teens are crowding into movies intended for little kids, and ruining it for everyone by being disruptive and trying to make themselves the center of attention. And the worst ones are vandalizing the theaters. Being a football hooligan is bad enough, but being a Minions hooligan is just embarrassing.

Attention whoring in a theater should be strictly reserved for movies no one was going to enjoy anyway. Instead of stupidly targeting children's fare, where were these fancy pants nuisances back when it was Morbin' time?

So Rick and Morty fans are no longer the worst people in the world?

The best part of that article was learning that there's a newspaper called the Mansfield Chad.

2022-07-05 7:05:30 AM
The article mentions cheering, clapping, rising to their feet about three times. It also mentions throwing things and abusing the staff.

Based on past observations, I suspect the terms were having relatively innocent fun when staff came to kick them out for cheering, clapping, and enjoying themselves. Then, the situation escalated.

In this metro area, there is one theater that refuses to eject kids for reacting to and enjoying the movie. Most people know to go to another theater if they don't like people talking during the movie. There is even a sign warning people before they buy tickets that the theater does not eject patrons for reacting out loud to the movie.

Before my kids learned to drive, I took them to that theater a few times. Each time there were huge groups of teens. My kids would see people from their current school, their old school, our place of worship, and their activities. The crowd was loud, rowdy, but otherwise well behaved. Favorite characters were met with standing ovations. They cheered, laughed, and when Groot died, wept like their Grandma had just died. Movies were transformed into a collective, ACTIVE, immersive experience.

I haven't enjoyed watching movies in a normal theater as much since. I can watch a movie in silence, without vocalized reactions from an audience, at home. I can't experience the participatory excitement of an engaged audience at home.

I don't know what's dumber - a cinema getting angry at the fact that teens acting like extreme morons disrupt the experience for everyone else that they have to issue refunds for the non-morons who just had their entire experience ruined and potentially losing further business, or the presumably grown adult defending idiots whose only apparent purpose in life is to make life hell for adults and children alike because they wanted to watch a movie.
