But Avatar two and three haven't been.... Ohhhhh

Avatar had some great CGI.
But the whole story line suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked!

Avatar = Dances With Wolves.
Been there, saw the thing, ate some popcorn, got laid.

I can't think of anything else that was so massively popular in its time that has has so little lasting cultural impact. I mean, without resorting to the Googles, can you name the main character and the actor who played him?

Anyone assuming there is going to be 4 sequels to your movie is in for a world of pain and boring movies.

I actually thought 3 was better than 2

2022-07-04 7:37:50 PM
I saw the movie in the full tricked out 3d and kind of lost myself in it, and it was enjoyable. But there was nothing about  the story or characterization that would make me care enough to remember the lore and the history of the ferngullies and their...whatever they got going on, So what's there to get excited about in the sequels, other than the hope that they'll be decent popcorn spectacles like the first one?

Disney world built a whole land to it. And the main character was named Jake.

You're all wrong. We know that the real source material that Cameron ripped off was Dances with Smurfs by Cartman, E.

He's 67. If things are as stressful as legend has it, some younger blood might be a good idea to take the hard part. Retire to an executive position, become a voice from above, jostle the elbow of the chosen one.

Jake Sully. "I see you Jake Sooooly!" Played by some generic - I'm sure a perfectly lovely person - white guy who was the go-to generic white guy leading man for a couple years around that time. No idea the actor's name, but I'm really bad with actor names anyway.

I saw it at least 10 times in the theater. It was a really immersive and fantastic... tech demo. As a movie it was pretty OK. The plot wasn't great, but it wasn't bad enough to be a negative either and distract. I remember the broad strokes, but if it just had typical production values it would have been quite forgettable. But I personally thought the 3D tech being showed off was impressive - the ultimate purpose for the movie when he was making it. The CGI was amazing, the art direction was great, everything about it technically was absolutely amazing. It was like a rollercoaster for your eyes.

As far as a movie itself, without all the impressive and thoughtfully implemented 3D tech, it's pretty meh. Haven't ever watched it at home even once - don't have a 3D TV.

I didn't see "Avatar" until a year or 2 ago. It was on cable. It was terrible. Easily Cameron's worst movie. There's just *nothing there*.

I think, at some point, Cameron decided he didn't want to make movies so much as he wanted to advance special effects. Which is fine, but current CGI is basically the endpoint of special effects. You can do anything you want, if you have the money and artists. So what is he doing, exactly, with new "Avatar" movies? Does he somehow think people want more of that? Because nobody does.

Starship Troopers 4 is actually the highest rated after Starship Troopers 1.

I mean, if he can get people to line up at IMAX like they are lining up for a ride at Disneyland, it might bank again. But I imagine most folks will be fine watching it on Netflix in 1080i. What I can't see is folks lining up for IMAX repeatedly every time a new one drops. I imagine he's not going to scale up the effects as it goes considering they are making them all at once, which means every installment after II will need a decent script.

Avatar was pretty good entertainment. We didn't need another Goodfellas at the time.

The spectacle was the 3D, and it was good, compared to the crap they layover most movies today. I saw Dr. Strange 2 in 3D. It... wasn't.

I suspect it'll mostly be China paying to see it.  After all, there's nothing to offend the Communist Party so it can run uncut.

Already? He's been doing this story exclusively for 15 years.

He's already shot 2 and 3, and now that the tech is where he wants it to be, he might just think it's time to do something else.

Dude's pushing 70. Spending a decade on a project might not seem like a wise use of time anymore.

They shot the film with two cameras but ultimately the 3D is the same concept that's been around for decades. If Avatar 6 is all holograms I'll see it.

He should get into VR. 3d has been done and done again. A true visionary filmmaker would make the first feature film designed to only be seen in VR. Imagine he 'reinvents' the Godzilla movie except it's in VR so that at different points the audience IS Godzilla or sometimes the people the creature is stomping on. Imagine seeing what it looks like from inside the creature's mouth as it eats you.

You're in luck. His first film in seven years is underway. It's a biopic on Milli Vanilli. So he's making a film about a couple talentless hacks. It's good to stretch out as an artist.

Yeah, this. What Cameron accomplished with 3d was stunning. "You really need to see this in the theater" has never been more apt. From a visual standpoint, there has never been a movie that even touched what Cameron did.

But now everybody watches stuff at home, so it's basically a waste of time.

Whatever it is, I've read that the principal cast had to learn freediving.

I really liked Avatar . Yeah, it was kind of a recycled plot but giving a disabled vet another chance ( and the whole body posession technology ) , plus the incredible landscapes and the flora and fauna , not to mention the distance it was from Terra ( its really, really far away ) was a nice touch. The re-awakening from the jump journey sequence was pretty nicely done, imho. I have been waiting too long for a sequel. I am sure it will not be up to expectations , but I have high hopes that it will be something decent. The man does know how to make films.

I would love to see a movie that was a fully-immersive VR session, where you'd get a joystick at your seat to direct your POV to move around through your personally-rendered version of the movie and see it from any angle you please.  With a director-approved automatic ideal path, of course.

The worst thing was for a little while everyone confused Avatar the movie with Avatar: The Last Airbender.

And then M. Night made that gadawful movie The Last Airbender and it was like getting it both ways.

Has anyone (in the US) ever met a single person who says Avatar is their favorite movie? Has anyone ever mentioned it in the past several years beyond the context that sequels are being made?

Avatar was a tech demo with a terribly generic, forgettable and predictable storyline..
