I find the Orville's scoring obnoxious. There's every opportunity to introduce leitmotifs for various characters and moments, but the score is as if someone threw the most generic Jerry Goldsmith music in a blender and handed it to a procedural generator.

Agree most wholeheartedly.

The new stuff has been awesome. Its quality has caused it to be the only show in my household that we don't wait for the end of the run then binge. We are on point every Thursday.

Seth seriously needs to stop putting his waaaay too young for him side-pieces front and center of his show. The latest one is just terrible at the acting thing.

This season has been pretty good.  Love a show that consistently swings for the fences like classic Trek.  Sometimes they hit a home run but sometimes they strike out.  But, they never try to coast.

Seth MacFarlane is a very talented man who always seems to be a smug parody of himself.
I'm not sure how else to phrase it but he always seems to be "on the make" or in gag mode.

I WANT to like the Orville. I was watching it with my boyfriend and I just didn't really enjoy it.   It can't commit to being a "Family Guy" in space laugh out loud comedy or a funny yet earnest space exploration show in the vein of Galaxy Quest.

The show doesn't seem to do either very well. The plots are standard issue Star Trek and the jokes don't always land. Most of the characters come off like, except for the robot. I was just disappointed

//I may try to watch the newer episodes as they sound drastically better.
//It's okay to like what I don't like
//Lower Decks and Bravest Warriors do the seriously and the funny so much better IMHO.

If you watch the newer episodes they've pretty much dropped all the Family Guyesque  humor (that was a Fox mandated thing).

Just like fonts, I'll bet the vast majority of viewers pay no attention to the score, and wouldn't remember a thing about it if you interviewed them immediately after. Me for instance, I'm a huge music nerd with an extensive accumulation of music and I doubt I have 100 movie scores out of 60K or so albums. And that's only because of stuff like Ascenseur pour l'échafaud.

I'm liking the more serious tone. And I get that some folks are tired of Seth, after all these years between Family Guy and American Dad, and his movies, but give the guy credit for taking his fandom to the next level, and doing it up right.

The first season was pretty rough with all the Family Guy type humor thrown in. I don't know if they got some fan feedback or just realized it wasn't working, but by the second season most of that was gone. This new season though, unbelievably better. That being said, many of this seasons episodes revolve around plots from prior seasons, so you might find yourself a little lost having not seen them.

I mentioned it in the last episode thread, but the score RIGHT before Topa goes in for surgery was a light hearted jaunt, despite the fact that his/her father is a crazy religious fundamentalist who was going to beat the shiat out of anyone on the ship.

That particular scene really stood out to me. As the drama hadn't reached it's climax yet, it felt really out of place.

...Can't wait until they actually use the new speedster instead of just having it sitting in the garage - for the new fins on the new shuttles to almost graze on every single landing.

I mean, they had a whole bit about how cool it was, including shooting up their own base*, to prove how cool it was... and then nothing...

*can you imagine standing at the portholes and seeing them firing at you during the shakedown run?

Curvy ships are really hard to make look good in shots.

For example, the Mon Calimari cruisers in ROTJ gave the crew fits.

Her range extends to "high school mean girl" and, in detriment to the show, McFarland feels the need to have her on camera as most a possible. It's a total Pookie situation. Unless they're setting her up for something sinister down the line? Otherwise there's no justification for giving the character unearned focus like that except the actor's his girlfriend.

-The romance between the Doctor and Isaac is just stupid, and that goes back to last season
-the guy who plays Lamar is a terrible actor
- forcing a romance between Malloy and the new girl
-i do enjoy the famous actors playing the admiralty, even in disguise-

Absolutely loving the third season. In my opinion every episode has knocked it out of the park so far, every one.

It's just a great, straight up scifi show now. The humor is minimal, a little here and there to take an edge off, but mostly just smart and serious stories that treat their subject matter with respect and care. Dialogue heavy, and they EARN the drama they set up.

10/10, no notes, hope very much they get a 4th season.

Why are there no enlisted? In the Fleet?  All you have is officers. That's not going to work.

I think the second season got the humor level about right.  This season has dialed it back too far.

I do like the new CGI and the ability to let the episodes run longer.

The themes this season have been a bit dark.  You can't really claim to be anything like Star Trek while the cast is trying to get a crew member to off himself.

It's my understanding everyone has to have gone through the Academy, or is in a reciprocal relationship with a non-terra institution. Like everyone has to have been through West Point or Annapolis or something similar. Or at least granted a designation based on performance.

I think that's what sets it apart from Star Trek. They're willing to show people as flawed instead of some perfect utopia where everyone has evolved beyond petty differences.

lacking the petty bullshiat is what I liked about the older trek. I think DS9 did the best with skirting around the optimistic view of humanity and the federation while showing the conflicts. Better than that wank called Discovery or Picard.

Yet people constantly claim that something that clearly isn't Trek, is.

Star Trek always went out of it's way not to teach that we shouldn't hold an individual responsible for the things done by their race.

I didn't even know the new Hulu series was out yet. Just now on the second episode. The production values are a whole lot better It's a lot less humorous, which I know most people fell is an improvement but I sort of miss. Overall, after only two episodes, I think it's worth a look.

Anyone know why they replaced the super powered cute girl with the less appealing one? Did Seth hit on the cute one?

He'd been dating Halston Sage, and when they broke up she left the show around that time. Probably not a coincidence. Now he's dating the actress who plays the Orville's new navigator, Charly Burke. I guess when they break up the Orville's going to get a new navigator again.
