90% of "horror movie classics" are absolute crap, and that's conservatively speaking.  People still say The Exorcist was frightening, what the actual boring fark?

The original Halloween wasn't bad. There's more deserving movies. Rosemary's Baby, The Ring and any of the Scream movies are on my short list.

Different people, different experiences. I laughed all the way through the Zuni doll part of Trilogy of Terror. Later I read online multiple reports from people saying that it gave them nightmares for weeks and still terrifies them to think of it today.

It did feature an axe murder and cannibalism. In between catchy musical numbers of course.

Horror seems to be a genre with a lot of fans and a low bar to entry.  ...Then again, I'm not a fan so it's almost all 'stupid' to me anyway.

I think jump scares are cheap.  I can't stand inconsistency.  I hate it when the monster acts to tease the audience rather than as you'd expect it to act based on motivations shown on the screen - like when an unstoppable evil killing machine creeps by in the background, unseen by the next victim.  Who is that for?  It's not adding to the victim's terror, it's not bringing the kill closer... it's JUST for the audience.  It makes no sense.

So to me 99.99% of horror is just dumb to the point I can't even laugh at it.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: A Quiet Place

The horror aspect was fine, as far as I can tell.  It was the sci-fi that was dumber than a pile of rocks.

Some of the scares of Amityville is that is supposed to be a true story.
So the list fails without Blair Witch Project.

Rosemary's Baby.

What a snooze-fest.

'Mama' was filmed in the town I grew up in here in Ontario (as with most of Guillermo del Toro's stuff).
It was quite standard as horror flicks go - but is wasn't too bad.

Agreed. The scariest part is when the doctor fired up a cigarette.

/Followed by when Mia Farrow cut off her hair and transformed from babe to 1960s boy. You expect her to start yammering unasked-for facts about about the space program.
//Followed by the ugly-ass sport jacket old man "hail Satan" wore.

It broke my #1 rule about horror movies, don't make your characters stupid just to drive the plot.

Horror fans is a self-selecting group, like comedy romance fans, or whatever Twilight falls into.

Internet nerds will fall over themselves to critique anything and everything that is an "everyman" show. Good, bad, ugly, just a sea of opinions. As soon as you fall into niche film genres, the only people left are fans of it and want to see it. The "bar" is a willingness to get paid to write reviews or spend your free time and share your opinions with random strangers.

And I appreciate that there is a relatively organic subgenre of film for people that they can enjoy something in. For better or worse. Lord knows I have some youtube entertainment by people who make a living watching movies that make less that 5 million dollars and saving me the effort of finding the best of a genre that appeals to me, but has a lot of stuff that is boring.

Rocky Horror is not a horror movie and is not overrated. Even people who love it will admit it's bad.

Halloween 1978 is tame by even '80's standards, but it's a great film.

The "twist" at the end of High Tension did ruin it. Worst. Twist ending. Ever.

Overrated implies people rate it highly.

The film series helped spawn/promulgate the term "torture porn", which tells you all you need to know about how people rate the films.

// FTR, Saw IV is the best one (the Game at the beginning is my favorite of the series)
// close second is the Game to start #7 (Saw 3D)
// Spiral was even a pretty good (of well-worn) story, and Jigsaw was a perfect homage/reboot

Those crappy "creepy doll" movies which were spinoffs of Paranormal Activity were just utter dreck. I forget the name though. Madeline? Caroline? I can't remember right now, but they couldn't scare a twitchy cat.

Jodie Foster's continuous throat trembles from the beginning of that movie on made me turn it off. It was way too distracting - still haven't see all of it.

I like the "Scream" franchise because they're written like soap operas are - twists, plot turns & cliffhangers. Except where soap operas stretch them out, the movies pack a lot into an hour + movie. I agree about the rest & "Halloween" is a classic to me because a normal day for Laurie Strode turned into a horrible nightmare that spans decades. I don't like all of the movies in that series tho.

I sort of agree with most of the list, if you buy the premise that many of them are "highly rated."

Midsommar is overrated, especially if you've seen the 1970s Wicker Man.

Maybe skip lists like this and just read Danse Macabre by Stephen King which really breaks down what to hunt for in even crappy horror.

Weird for them to take on Friday the 13th part 1. which zero people rate highly.

A big mine would be any 1950s-1980s" "possession or Devil baby" stuff which is pretty risible in these more atheist times.

Nice try, but you're not going to get me to say the doll's name so she haunts and kills me instead.
