Dmitry Kolker, a 54-year-old diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer, was taken from his hospital bed in Novosibirsk on Thursday by Federal Security Service officers, who put him on a four-hour flight to Moscow's Lefortovo prison.

From John Hopkins:
Stage IV pancreatic cancer has a five-year survival rate of 1 percent. The average patient diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer will live for about 1 year after diagnosis.

They must have been in a rush to get rid of him.

"These charges are absolutely ridiculous and extremely cruel and unusual to be levied on such a sick man," Kolker's son told Reuters. "They knew that he was on his deathbed and they chose to arrest him."

Lol maybe someone should notify them that Russia has a really shiatty track record of being "Fair" and "Transparent" and "Not treating its citizens as meat packages with state chosen expiration dates"

Arrested for treason for lecture to Chinese students? I wonder what honest things he said about Putin and Russia.

"The last contact I had with my father was at 6:15 p.m. on the flight to Moscow. He said he was saying goodbye..."

No doubt. Sad.

I guess they couldn't make an example out of a dead man.

If he was on IV, he probably had days left anyway.

Did you see the story below about Arizona election officers resigning because of threats from Trump supporters? This is how you end up with a Putin.

No joke, I'd take a hit from the FSB over stage 4 pancreatic.

So the FSB is so powerful and omnipresent that they can unhook the IV lines from someone who is dying of stage 4 pancreatic cancer? In a hospital, in their own country?

Wow, I better put on my boots so my feet have something to shake in.

Yes?
I mean the FSB that got Putin into power and keeps him there?
Short of risking someone in the FSB going after his own seat, I'm sure Putin will give them all the power they need/want.
That or get it dismantled/gutted out of paranoia.

Yes, the same FSB that put him in power, and keeps him there, has the power to unhook the IV lines from someone suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, within their own country.

It's a chicken shiat move from a failing power. Every move that Russia has made in the last seven months has screamed of desperation from a weakened State.

I just read a book that talked about a little fued the FSB had with the Russian version of the FDA. Apparently the heads of both agencies were competing for favor with Putin (both went to college with him). The FDA had some boarder guards arrested for smuggling drugs in from China, a common and regular thing other than the getting arrested for it part, and "raised a scandal" by implying the FSB wasn't doing its job. The  FSB responded by arresting business owners in Moscow for importing narcotics (which were not narcotics and completely legal cleaning supplies) and claiming that the FDA wasn't doing its job. They went tit-for-tat arresting each other and their supporters for various things till it got public attention and Putin had the heads of both agencies fired and arrested on various charges, thereby eliminating two potential rivals in one go. Oh, and most of the people arrested still got prison terms. These things are absolutely still happening today, and  I  suspect we'll eventually hear rumors about how the Ukraine war was used to settle scores and reshuffle the lower and  mid-level leadership among the Putin cronies.

/book is  The Future is History: How totalitarianism reclaimed Russia, if anyone is interested.

Yup. He was going to die slow and alone in a hospital but due to their actions death was quick and he's front page news.

I even tried to read his obscure laser research on researchgate.

I hate to say it but the FSB did him a favor, he's now a legend.

The real question is what sort of monster puts a single level entry/front on a multi-story building so it blocks/bisects many windows on several wings?

My boss's brother just died of that last week. Explains the random assholeish texts I got from him during my 1 week vacation. Might have been good to know before I responded...
Next week will be interesting.

I think quite a few people's sarcasm detectors broke this morning. I thought I laid it on thicker than my prababushka putting butter and mayonnaise on a salami sandwich. Well, I always called her grandma.

I can echo that statement. How thick can you be to not see sarcasm in front of your face?
