(PC Gamer)   A dog may be a good sidekick, but a cat is much better choice as the player's character for a video game. Khajiit approves this   (pcgamer.com) divider line

Article is obviously written by someone who dislikes Dogs and lacks the creative capacity to see other pets in game leading roles.

Dogs have just as much potential as main characters, if not more so, than cats. Dogs are natural pack animals, so it is fully possible to come up with a game scenario that plays out almost like a war game with a Dog MC or maybe a sort of Assassin's creed kind of game. Have your Dog break from some pack, or get left behind by a family for some reason, then start to form some sort of pack to accomplish the game's main story and carry that through line forward. Work with your pack to accomplish basic goals, make sure your pack has their basic needs met, etc...

Cats only have the benefit that they are loners and therefore work as purely single player MCs.

I dunno, I've always thought the cybernetic greyhounds of Snow Crash would be amazing in a video game.

Dogs aren't just pack animals. Dogs are family! Play with that and the scenarios are endless.

Family killed? Literal lone wolf takes revenge.

Or maybe you could collect and equip humans to go on  RPG style  walks?

Battle Royale where it's a dog park and you gotta sniff butts, capture bones, mark territory, whatever.

The stuff writes itself

And is a much more interesting game than cat lazily wanders around finding things because it was bored and wandered into a thing.

Hated killing dogs in The Last of Us. Especially when you hear the handler yell "they killed Bear!" all full of anguish.

Cats? Fark em. Run them over every chance I get in GTA5.

That was a waste of time reading. If you want to kill a few hours especially if you have kids try Pupperazzi. Basically a picture snapshot hide and seek game lining up pics with various objects and dogs in the frame. Steam or Game Pass.

Hey! Those Budgies in Pet Resort needed tending! At least they did when doing QA on the game. Couldn't comment on the value of the encyclopedia on the game, we got banned from trying to review that.

Already told my brother and few friends that want to hop right into the Hot Wheels expansion for FH5 on the 19th when it's released that I'll be busy playing this instead.

With all the hype around cyber-kitty (like 2 articles here on fark already), it better not be cyber-punk again.

Hmmmmm.. as a human who is owned by a cat, I don't know it I really want to roleplay as one.

(reads the rest of article)

The part where the cat adorably knocks over a bunch of bottles even though it easily could have avoided them with its nimble little pawsies, which are perfect, like the pawsies of all cats.

Pawsies? Really? Oh tres adorbs.  But, oh shiat, I could do that for hours, 'specially if it were a mini game.
(can't wait to see how they'll include litter boxes)

/I guess I'd only would be interested in playing as a canine protag in a game if every fence, stoplight, bollard and post was mine to whiz on

I love dogs in real life and in video games - but I can see the point that the protagonist in a stealth game probably works better as a cat.

If you die in the game, does the cat eat your face?

and sometimes I'd go out on our front porch to 'hunt'. We had a big tree out there that attracted lots of birds. My sister also had a cat, an outdoor cat. It got to the point that all I had to do was pump that rifle once, and that cat would magically appear and sit next to me while he stared up at the tree. He KNEW exactly what that sound meant and he was ready to benefit.

So, in an game, a cat could be really useful. It would be entertaining to condition a cat pet to do things to help you. Because it's a cat, the cat would also do things on its own terms. There could be a lot of emergent gameplay that way.
