The US having the worst health care system out any of the countries listed ( even worse than Chile) makes that no surprise.

There's no profit motive for increasing the life expectancy of the poor.

Even more empirical proof that America has become a death cult...

"Live a shorter life so you can meet Jeebus sooner, while bankrupting your entire family" has become the GOP marching anthem.

Hmm. I was wondering what I should order out for myself on my son's, who practically exclaims food, glorious food, every time he returns and wants pizza delivered to our CNJ home, last supper  on his last night home.

Not that it's relevant.

I appreciate how you don't let reality get in the way of your beliefs. Kinda like religious people.

The US is far less religious now than it has been, probably ever.

The problem is that a big chunk of the religious folks have abandoned any pretense of living by the teachings of Christ and have gone with serving Mammon instead.

Weird, there are tweeters in that thread balming the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But the deaths due to those wars are vanishingly piddly compared to any other cause. The Americans were under a lot of daily stress - caused by their own shiatty military - but they were not under daily attack. What kills American armed forces is what their own government and military branches do to them when they get home.

Actually America has AMAZING Healthcare...
You just have to be a 1%er to access it, everyone else has been brainwashed into thinking the Death Panels that approve or deny life saving operations and drugs only exsist in socialized countries meanwhile America is the only place I've ever heard of people rather choosing to "walk it off" when it comes to massive internal bleeding or flesh eating bacteria cuz they'd rather chance it than go medically bankrupt.

The US and Cuba have very similar life expectancies.

That's part of Castro's favorite joke.

What are the 3 great failures in Cuba? Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

That's also the scandal of American health care.

That's an entirely different claim, but legislators are elected by the people, to represent the people. If we elect them and don't like what they do, that's largely on us collectively.

It's especially difficult because virtually all politicians state they are religious. Biden, a democratic President is a practicing Catholic.

Republicans are marginally more religious, but people on Fark like to pretend that they are the only religious ones.

Most Americans, most Democrats and most Republicans all believe in some God and some concept of heaven.

This man in the foreground literally undertook to arrange for 40 million uninsured Americans to have healthcare. Everyone who didn't have it - he tried to close all the gaps.

In the end about 25 million got covered -- because he tried to work with Republicans....and in the end, not one Republican voted for it.

But dont try to tell folks that no Democratic legislator is fittin to try.

Yeah, it's not a new thought -- analysts first noticed this about 15 years ago -- that patchy healthcare access, cheap, s***ty diets, opiates and alcohol -- and stress -- were starting to show up in American Life Expectancy figures.

And that if it could be boiled down to one word, it would be "despair".

I think you mean Thomas Nast. Tom Paine died 45 years before the Republican Party was formed.

And the donkey (or jackass) as a symbol for the Dems goes back to the Jacksonian Democrats' split from the Jeffersonian Republicans. Get it; "Jackson".

America is responsible for globalism but also can retreat from it with the least amount of ill effects is gonna be the funniest thing I'll read all weekend.

Even the thread of people who claim to hate snowflakes and people getting offended getting all riled up by a hyperbolic Reason article isn't as enjoyable.

That's not how it generally works. A rougher life will age you faster, so you still get the diapers and drooling on the end.

The US has the 12th highest obesity rate (36%) in the world.  Minus healthcare other G7 nations provide to their citizens.

The closest to the US in obesity is Canada, coming in at #26. (29%) UK is at #36 (28%)

Japan is the lowest at #185 (4.3%)

Being overweight adds a host of health issues, in addition to how one perceives the idea of healthcare.  Here in the US, most of us have grown up with the idea that healthcare is a privilege and even if you have it, one must always weigh the cost/benefit of using it.  People in the US put off doctor visits as they always cost money.

This an expectancy from birth, so I assume the biggest factor is the extra young and middle age Americans who are ODing and suicide.

2022-07-03 8:10:49 PM
I'm sure the US has terrible life expectancy, but Japan being number one is suspicious.

Doesn't Japan have, like, zero records on their older population? Isn't there a big problem with lots of old people in Japan claiming to be, like, 110 years old and crap like that? I know that being really, really old is somehow considered a really great and important achievement in Japan, so lots of people lie about it, and the government seems to go along with it

Anyway, the United States is about 20 years away from being a failed state. Republicans destroyed it. There is still a possibility it will be saved, but not without violence, unfortunately.
