That's not a defense. It's barely a motive. Even if it was too close, what authority did he have for unilaterally removing and discarding it?

How many votes did that sway?

"We are told the video then shows Thompson wadding up the sign and throwing it in a nearby dumpster."

Wonder if the dumpster was too close to the polling place, too...

I found the guy who thinks campaign signs do something besides fill up all the dumpsters after elections. I mean, sure, I don't doubt that 1000 campaign signs will have an effect over time. But *that* one sign? It's meaningless.

Guess he wasn't witty enough to simply deface the sign.

Shahan said he has had a dozen of his signs come up missing around Kirksville and out in the county during this campaign season. It is unknown who took the other 11.

We know.

It's because they have no basis for comparison.

After Citizens United, I don't understand how any restrictions on time or place of electioneering stand.

Thompson has admitted he took the sign. He claims he did it to possibly prevent Shahan from getting in trouble for having his sign closer than allowed by law to the polling place right across the street from the location of the sign.

I love how his "I'm just helping" claim is somewhat undercut by the video:

The incident was caught on video by a surveillance camera...you can clearly see that the person taking the sign is Thompson....the video then shows Thompson wadding up the sign and throwing it in a nearby dumpster.

Missouri.

We don't need a tag. We need the State Mental Hospital to set up a branch office just inside the metal detectors at the State Capitol.

I run a polling place. I take down signs every election. I get into standoffs sometime because people will work the gray areas of a law. The sheriff is called in. Whatever he says, goes. Fine by me, I'm just trying to do my job.

No wonder so many people voted for Trump, throwing hamburgers at the wall in anger is a sign of good character for a majority of Americans.

I've found them useful if there's multiple in one yard, especially if they're paired with a Trump sign.  Sometimes it's really hard to find any info on local candidates outside of their own campaign sites since news doesn't cover local elections very well.  But if I see the name paired with a Trump sign, or otherwise in a yard that I know kept up a Trump sign or Trump flag for yeeeears after the election?  Tells me all I need to know.

I've got nearby neighbors who have had drumpf flags flying since January 2019.

The only difference is they've just recently taken down the 2020 flags and replaced them with 2024 ones, or ones with no dates on them, like the "climb aboard the drumpf train."

Why anyone would be dumb enough to climb aboard a train drumpf was in control of is beyond me. That train would derail immediately upon pulling out of a station, or better yet shake apart and crumble before they'd have the engine fired up and ready for the train to move.

Either way, it's a catastrophe waiting to happen, since everything drumpf touches dies.

On other people's land, without their permission?

I'm guessing that I could not get away with that.

He thinks 90 feet is 25? Maybe his license should be on hold until he goes to the DMV for an eye check and maybe a driving test.

Yep. A yard with multiple signs can save you a lot of research time, especially for local elections where the information on candidates is hard to find. The yard that was full of signs for losers and nazis in 2020 can inform you who the nazis are that want to be on your school board this year.
That doesn't help you to figure out who to vote FOR, but now you know who NOT to vote for. We had 16 candidates for 3 seats on the school board.
