Fun to watch so far today.  I'd like to see Cort hang on in front of the home crowd but his lead is really slipping at this point.

At work so can't watch. Yesterday's stage was fun to watch, especially the 18km bridge. Urban pulling back to the pack was a thing of beauty.

Uran, not Urban. I don't think Karl is changing careers anytime soon.

Compound V was only allowed during the 90s tour.

Sadly missed yesterday and today for travel so have to watch highlights. I loved the time trial course setup. That is such a beautiful city.

F'ing USA network.  TdF is on *checks listings* from 2:00am to 6:00am.  Do they run it again later? Nope.  Afternoon is full of must see TV of Law & Order SVU reruns. One of these days I'm going to have to get a DVR.

What ways are they cheating these days? Drugs/doping? Electric motor assist? Or some other method we'll maybe learn about in a few years?

That sucks. It's on at 8 am here. It's nice to wake up to that. Even nicer to have Bob Role back live at the event.

Heh bjarne riis is still considered the 1996 winner even after he admitted he doped that year.
If lance was a frenchman they would still have him listed as the winner those years.
Hell, they went so far down the list trying to find a clean rider, they gave up and said there was no winner those years because they were all dirty.

I'm sure you would know better than me, but thinking they don't exist because one hasn't been found seems naive, especially since they have cheated and lied for decades.

You don't even know that the UCI has an active, very busy system that scans race bikes for this stuff at most major events.

Do you.

You also don't know that while doping certainly is a continual problem in cycling the UCI's biological passport & testing system puts every ball sport's current non-effort and "don't ask don't tell" setup to shame.

Hell, football & baseball all but blatantly allow doping with minimal consequences.

If I was to post that, a Farker would have replied with "but, but Clinton" so fast your head would spin. Cycling may be clean as a whistle now with all sorts of testing and analysis of men and machine, but it doesn't matter. They earned their ridicule as much as football or baseball did.

Literally the only thing that video proves is that you are unfamiliar with bike racing & how it works.

"Look! Suddenly this guy went faster than the other guys! That proves he's got a motor in his bike!" Give me a break.

Hell, the sport's got enough real problems without inventing ones that've never been shown to exist. There is all of one finding of a motor in a bike anywhere in the pro ranks. It was a dumb U23 cyclocrosser who in all likelihood was misled & had her career ruined by her support crew, and even then the bike they found wasn't used in the race. But it's very existence at the race was enough for a well-earned multi-year ban.

Regardless, it's quite pathetic to blithely tar a whole sport with motor-doping when you have no evidence to prove anything.

I'd be hard-pressed to find a sport that takes doping and fighting it more seriously now than cycling, because of the history in the 90's & 00's.

You can't ridicule the sport today for things that happened 20 years ago and have been fought since. It's always going to be a problem & an arms race, but the facile "they're all dopers" nonsense became tiresome and false long ago. These are real people who work their asses off, often for not much money, and they deserve better than that.

Did you watch all the video? Wheels spinning after a crash more than just from momentum, a guy holding back a spinning bike, etc. I don't know much about bike racing, but I understand physics. Their is too much smoke. This is a hypothetical, but I would bet a thousand dollars that electromechanical cheating has been used in professional roadrace cycling.

I do admire the folks that work their asses off. I would admire them more if they come clean. I enjoyed the doc about Lemond when he was teamed with Hinault. It seems like a great story, but there are allegations about him, and I don't know what to believe.

2022-07-03 10:01:51 PM
Thing is, in all likelihood Lemond & Hinault were at least mostly clean or at least on an even field.  Doping advances, matching medical advances, tore through allsports in the 90's/00's, after their exploits in the 80's. To the extent it was nearly impossible to have a career if they weren't doping. Lemond's plainly said there's no way he could've had a career in the doping era.

Totally agree with you on all of this, been a huge cycling fan my whole life.

Having said that, they did find a motor on a bike before.  Although it wasn't World Tour, it was cyclocross but still UCI event. It was a few years ago so I forget the details but I think it was a U23 female rider that had a motor in her warm up bike and never switched it out before racing, but still always begged the question "why have a motor in any bike?"

Have you watched some of the videos I posted earlier in the thread? They seem damning to me. Sitting on the seat out-accelerating a guy standing up, and wheels that look like they are spinning under power. I assume the guys making the judgements are experience riders.

Also if you are looking the NBC Sports APP (on phone and on streaming devices) does have the full replays as well if you have a service provider that carries USA. If you login in, it should work and might if you go to NBC sports website too. It's the USA coverage with commercials and because an app, some bonus ads too, but it will allow to watch at other points in the day once full event is done for day

Welcome. I tend to miss a lot of the early morning stuff so it is good to have that option for the background while I work midday. I used to love those old outdoor/NBC channels that would basically play it like 3 times a day back when.

Peacock has the world feed, less (or maybe no) commercials, but no Phil. Who I still can't listen to without Paul, even though it's been since 16.
