Secular holiday? It's a god damned all American HOLY DAY!

Praise the almighty guns and bombs of American might, by blowing stuff up. Give thanks for the slaughter of all those non-Christian darky nations for their natural resources by grilling up meats on the grill

I'm as patriotic as patriots get (in a genuine, respectable way, not the bullshiat way of fascist god-bothering hillbillies) and this is the first year in my life that I'm not going to celebrate Independence Day because I don't feel like there's a whole lot about us worth farking celebrating right now.

Maybe next year if we've brought fascism back down to an appropriate minimum I'll break out the sparklers and shiat again. Until then, kiss my red white and blue ass.

Lifeless: It's not a secular day if it's not celebrating a secular nation.

To be fair, the US used to be a secular nation as far as its governance was concerned

But that's before the spineless and pathetic Dems let the christo-fascist minority hijack this nation via gerrymandering and information warfare via "news" outlets like FOX

Seriously, ever since Janet Reno shat the bed on dealing with the far-right militias, it's been a downhill ride into Jesustan

And you can be damn well sure that nothing will be done under Biden's watch. Because he considers many who've been working toward this end his "friends" and due to that clear conflict of interest, won't do shiat to stop the obvious from happening. Best we can hope for is Biden dying in office so the far right can freak out at having a non-elected darky in the White House, over play their hand and hopefully give cause for a Pres Harris to order a heavy handed smack down on this shiat

Just because you complain about the taking of natural resources from "non-christian dark nations" that does not excuse your taking advantage of those very resources: The oil in your car, the lithium and cobalt in your batteries, the coffee in your coffee, the nickel and terbium in your cell phone, the petroleum based plastic in your absolutely everything.

Go ahead and disparage your fellow Americans, bitterly denounce them.  But just remember, you are absolutely part of the problem.  And you are a hypocrite as well.  Can't you just let the rest of us celebrate our incredible good fortune to be part of the greatest nation that ever existed?

I'm not going to shiat on your parties. Have some beers, enjoy your barbecues, blow up your fireworks.

But it's a hollow celebration at best. You do know that, right? In your heart of hearts, when you allow yourselves a moment of introspection, you do know there is something deeply wrong with your country, don't you?

But, hey. Have fun.

That is incorrect. The USA eliminated slavery as soon as was possible. It started out half free, and only went up from there. A war was fought and thousands of white men died to end slavery in the whole country.

When your "self esteem" is based on what you yourself, deep down, know to be lies, you have no real self esteem.
That's why the fake organized opposition to "CRT" is such a sad pretense.
"Patriotism" that cannot stand the test of self-honesty is not real patriotism.

It started long before that. "In God we trust", "under God", Prohibition, Billy Graham in the Oval Office... it's been slow steady push, and somehow it's succeeding despite there being fewer and fewer Christians.

Clash City Farker: The USA eliminated slavery as soon as was possible.

That is false. It was possible to never have allowed it in the first place, and some New World nations did not. It was possible to outlaw it much sooner, as England and most of Europe did.
America preserved slavery as long as it was possible.
Many people in America are not free or equal even today.
Our history is one long story of mistreating Native Americans, Blacks, women, gays, and any other social outliers from the white Christian nexus.
Again - if your boasting and bragging about how great you are is all based on lies, you're just a bullshiatter, not a patriot.

2022-07-03 9:04:11 AM
July 4th is when Americans celebrate a slave owner writing that all men are created equal. He also wrote this:

"He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions."

Ahh yes, so if you live in America you damn well better love the brutal legacy of murder and rape of nations and their people around the world, or roll over and die, because being an American means profiting off the exploitation and misery of others

Just because those like you celebrate systemic rape and murder doesn't mean those of us who condemn it are wrong. It just means you and your ilk are fascist trash who stand against sustainability, humanity and common decency and are very much the REAL PROBLEM Americans need to recon with in order to not only reclaim this nation, but to refactor  capitalism into an equitable and sustainable system that benefits all, which is entirely achievable, our nation and government simply chose to forget after DC swung open its doors and lifted its skirts for the Corporate Lobbyists and stopped caring about the welfare and interests of its own Citizens

Odd, Independence Day doesn't celebrate Rome, the British Empire, the Hispanic Monarchy, ancient Greece, the Mongols, or China at any of the numerous points in its history.

A bunch or white criminals came to this place, murdered the inhabitants and killed them with their filthy diseases, and then stole their land. Then, they went to Africa and kidnapped several million Africans and brought them here in bondage  to build a wealthy nation while their white owners sat on their fat asses.
Today, the same nation now makes economic, military, and environmental warfare on the rest of the world while still shiatting on minorities and immigrants.
If you actually feel any sincere patriotism or love for this nation, you will accept it's horrid history and resolve to change it.
Lying to yourself and others about it only tells me that you intend more of the same.

US born ex-pat living in England since 1987.  Since I emigrated, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, staying abroad for long periods.  Doing so has opened my eyes and made me appreciate this globe in a way a non-traveler can not.

Is America great?  That rather depends on your definition of "great".  Yes in some ways, but definitely no in many ways.  At the moment, given the idiocy for the current polar opposite politics, fundamentalism crushing women's rights and voting rights back to late 19th century, and guns being protected more than children unless they're a foetus, America has lost its way.

I blame in part treating the Constitution like the Ten Commandments in stone rather than the living, breathing, amendable document our forefathers intended it to be, and the decision to change the motto from the noble E Pluribus Unum to In God We Trust during McCarthyism, using the Bible to govern while attempting to alienate and demonise non-Christians.

America is powerful without doubt, but power dies not make greatness.  Greatness is not dividing a nation into different beliefs in order to rule.  It's not great to be healthy and prosperous when your neighbours can't afford to get medical care without going bankrupt.  It's not great to use the excuse of the Constitution to create an armed society where 45,000 people are killed and 79% of all homicides are at the end of a barrel.

There's a lot wrong about England.  It's not perfect.  But for the most part, it's a helluva lot more mature than America, and they see America gaining its independence as a lucky escape for them.  (I'd use "dodging a bullet", but I've already touched on that.). To be honest - they're not wrong.

Enjoy your Independence Day celebrations, be safe and have fun.  Tomorrow would be a good day to start growing up.

All of these groups you name owned slaves in North America and white men stopped it.

All those groups also stopped it - not just a few white men, many of whom fought on the other side.
America was the last major western nation (unless you count Brazil) to abolish slavery, and many white men fought hard against that, and died to preserve the slavery they loved.
Argue what you wish - but please tell the truth.
You are entitled to your own opinions - not your own facts.

Always made me laugh. The issue at hand wasn't that colonists didn't want to pay taxes; it was that they wanted to raise taxes themselves rather than sending money back to England and then having it redistributed to them by Parliament where they only had "virtual representation."

If King George had allowed the colonies to manage their own finances they would have raised taxes even higher than what the crown did. So this whole mythos of "low tax libertarianism" was always based upon sketchy logic.

We have a neat wall calendar made by my grandfather in law- it's a wood back with some rails you slide little numbered tiles into.  There are some extra tiles for holidays, birthdays and the like.  As you might imagine, the tile for the 4th is an American flag.

This year I put it in upside down.

Independence Day indeed

The whole narrative is a bullshiat story. As a person born in 1950, and educated in the 50s and 60s, I can confidently say that roughly 70-80% of what I was taught regarding America and her history was outright lies - and critical omissions.
The standard, performative, "Patriotic" narrative of American history is almost entirely false.
