(Gas prices go up)

Republicans: Save us, Democrats!

How do you put out something about gas prices, as a Democrat, and not hammer on this? It should be a part of every single piece of messaging on the topic.

It's not the stations. Maybe the same companies, but a different business unit.

Sheetz recently dropped the price of E85 to $3.49 a gallon, and E15 to $3.99 a gallon, until the 4th of July.  That should be all you need to know that they could drop the price of regular gas, too.

If they are ok to eat the losses. It's a gimmick to get free publicity but it is costing them money.

Companies don't voluntarily just lose money without a reason.

Or else..?

I mean yeah - it's not exactly a politically stupid move to say gas prices are too high.  Waddayagonnadoaboutit?

1. Isn't the margin at gas stations really narrow?
2. Aren't there a ton of state laws against dropping the sale price too much?

The problem is the farking oil companies selling the gas to the stations.

The problem is commodity speculators manipulating the prices. These speculators, gasp, include the oil companies themselves.

I know a gas station that filled up their tanks while prices were high. The law states they must sell their gas at the price that they bought it. Gas prices dropped dramatically afterwards. They could not (legally) sell their gas at any profit, and their convenience store was not very convenient so no profits there.

They went out of business with tanks full of gas while the prices were still high but not as high as they had paid.

Gas station owners are not the problem.

/I told them to sell low and pay any fines but they didn't want to break the law

It's good that he's calling them out for exploiting a war for profit, because that IS exactly what they're doing, and there needs to be people in power not afraid to stand up and yell, "BULLshiat!" when they try to claim these are the real prices...

...but unless I'm missing something, the "fix this. now." has no actual teeth behind it. Any actual punitive action taken against the companies would require an act of Congress, where the farking coal baron and whatever Sinema is will make it dead in the water, at least until after the midterms where 2 seats can hopefully be gained. At most, Biden could threaten a mass-release of the oil reserve to crash the price, but there's only so much in said reserve, and the oil companies would just wait it out, then set the prices even higher with that play used up.

2022-07-02 4:51:18 PM
I fully expect Biden and the DNC will act on this with the same fury that they used when Manchin stopped anything with a hint of progressivism from passing the Senate.

The refineries are the bottleneck. Oil goes from pipelines or tankers to the refineries. There, they sit and the refineries control the flow out to the market. Of course, the oil companies own the refineries as well, but I think they are different business units completely separated in terms of their P&L and balance sheets.

Yeah, the Dems need work on their messaging. They should hire the pros that are assisting with the J6 hearings. They are very effective so far.

After 4 years it's also adorable for some to forget what it's like for a President to act like they give a damn.

If you prefer the latter, I know which trash fire you voted for last time.

I wonder what he could to to sanction price gouging.

If you want the President to be Tyler Durden, you're going to be waiting a long long time.

You're also 16 years old.

Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you're paying for the product. And do it now....

or what?

If the president could do something by now it should have already been done.  And two people in the Senate wont support any legislation because "the fillibuster" which only one party uses effectively.

They haven't realized that most people have noticed that it's real easy to imply you're gonna do something then not do anything.

Talk is cheap, let's see what actually happens.
