When I look at the young Gru, I think of Martin Shkreli. Remember him?

So much for the "parents don't want to subject their kids to Covid" excuse for Lightyear bombing. I'm assuming no two female Minions kissed.

For whatever reason, my wife loves the minions.

And for whatever strange reason, I do too.

I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Well this disproves my theory of families just waiting for animated films to come to streaming. I guess it's just true that too few people actually wanted a Lightyear film.

I spent most of the last two weeks in the hospital with nothing better to do between doses of fentanyl besides watching bad basic cable.  I think every 3rd show on the air had some kind of Minions tie in.

I haven't seen it, I have no desire to see it and I'm already sick of the thing.

Wife took the kids. Said it was terrible even by kid-movie standards, and the only parts that were even a little funny were in the trailer.

It's a kids movie from a successful franchise, on a holiday weekend. Of course it'll do well. Let's see how it does in week 2.

I laughed out loud, as did the rest of the audience. It was fun. Light year wasn't bad, but wasn't comedy, either.

And, yeah, I was masked and distanced. Been wanting to see minions for a while now.

I think the difference was... Light year was ok, but it wasn't something I was eagerly awaiting. Minions are always going to have hilarious spots, and I am here for it.

Maybe they/fans/family/whatever, wanted a Lightyear film based on the artwork and character created in Toy Story? I haven't seen the movie but the style of the movie makes no sense especially when Pixar established over four movies what is the character Buzz Lightyear. Every time I saw a preview for the film, I kept thinking, the only way for this to work was for Lightyear to somehow end up in a box on a toy store shelf at the end of the movie.

It was the movie Andy saw, and then bought toys from. It was... Ok, but did not feel like Toy Story, because it isn't .

My understanding is that they justify it by the Buzz we know and love being the Real Ghostbusters version of the character, the toy based off of the cartoon continuation of the live-action movie.

I swear I thought this movie came out a year or two ago. Just shows how memorable and distinct these sequels are.

But hey, new merch!

.2 Minions 2 Furious was originally slated for July 2020.  It was advertised at that year's Super Bowl.  LEGO released a few tie-in sets.  Then, well... you know.

The plague.

So yes, you've been seeing advertisements for this same movie for two and a half years.  It's not just you.

Maybe if you're nice, we'll let you pay a nickel to see a black and white foreign film about a man who thinks he's a Loaf of bread while trying to understand the existence of his bicycle.
Or you could just fark off.

My kid loves the minions. The language is deceptively clever, instantly understandable while being composed of non words but every now and then they hide something in there. One calls a mirror macumba, which is. Brazilian black magic, one quits by angrily yelling "ciao bello", papagena, the love interest in The magic Flute is the fire hydrant.

They act like mischievous kids, which is why the kids instantly gravitate towards them

Random thought: That one-copy Wu Tang alb was seized from him and sold at auction to an NFT-buying group who has announced vague plans to make it more widely available. Is the crash in value of NFTs going to force them to sell it as well?

I think their popularity makes more sense if we consider them sentient puppies and kittens.

They're funny and likable enough on their own. The only reason for hating them is guilt-by-association with Boomery Facebook memes of them bending over laughing at a joke hot off the Gutenberg press.

If anyone made that excuse it's a bad one. Box office now is almost back to prepandemic levels. And Spiderman broke records during the biggest surge and I doubt no one took their kids to see it.

I made the comparison before, but Lightyear was essentially Pixar's "Solo". A movie featuring a beloved character that only got okay reviews and buzz (no pun intended). Also played by a different actor

Quality and word-of-mouth are still effective ways to get people to see stuff. Same reason No Way Home cleared a billion

Also, fwiw, the movies clearing a billion this year (including No Way Home) are particularly impressive because they're doing it without China and/or Russia

All I know is that when buzz light year kissed that minion it made me feel strange in my pants.  And now I want to fight everyone.

Also, Anna and Kristof kissed in that stupid Frozen 2 movie while her sister lezbo'd it up with their mom and then she became a horse nut.

And if your think it's okay to spray bug spray in your house you are right!  I do that all the time and nothings wrong with ME!

Disney seems to be making business decisions based on pure spite at this point

They weren't trying to stick it to anyone with Lightyear. They were hoping for a huge hit that would turn all the kids into little Andys, begging their parents for all the toys and posters and bedsheets and anything else the manufacturers could come up with. Somehow they just missed the obvious point that Buzz and Woody are popular because they're toys having funny little toy adventures, and no one was asking for the shows or movies their toylines were supposedly based on. Woody even spelled it out in the first Toy Story.

Woody: Wait a minute. Being a toy is a lot better than being a Space Ranger.
Buzz: Yeah, right.
Woody: No, it is!
[Points through the Window to Andy's Room]
Woody: Look, over there in that house is a kid who thinks you are the greatest, and it's not because you're a Space Ranger, pal, it's because you're a toy. You are his toy!

It still might have worked if Lightyear was an incredibly fun and adventurous movie that could have stood on its own without the Toy Story connection, but for whatever reason, they chose a story where the "Space" Ranger gets confined to one planet and spends most of his time retrying the same unsuccessful escape route over and over and over again. Lightyear is supposed to be the Star Wars of Andy's universe, but Star Wars would have flopped too if it's story was just Luke constantly trying and failing to get off Tatooine.

Besides, they already made a show that made much more sense as the imaginary inspiration for the Buzz toyline, but Buzz Lightyear of Star Command wasn't a big success either. You'd think that would have told them something.
