Subby, on what planet do Garbage and the Cranberries qualify as "grunge"?

Subby was just being meta and proving the authors point, right? Right?

This....I might have said Courtney Love.

I lived through the 90s and even remember most of it and I don't know what grunge is, aside from less guitar work and more moaning, meandering vocals than rock from the 80s. And more flannel.

Bingo.

They are as much grunge as these bands are "punk":

I was at the front for The Pixies in 89 and Kim Deal looked at me for what seems like forever.

Or perhaps she was looking  through me.

I like the first version better

I still listen to L7, Throwing Muses, Belly, Breeders, etc.  Although you can argue that the middle two are more just alt than grunge, of course.

Finch is holding a copy of the January 1992 issue of Spin, which happens to be Nirvana's first national magazine cover; the face in question belongs to her ex-boyfriend, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

Dave Grohl wrote significant part of album released sometime before January 1992 by whichever band Finch was member of at the time

Yeah, we'll go with the first one. It's all been downhill from there, hasn't it?

Think pieces are pretentious.  😄  But yeah. I can agree that AS WITH EVERY WAVE OF MUSIC, the female acts were downplayed and underappreciated.

If you're going to narrow it down to just 3 - Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hanna, Courtney Love (or, if you don't want to give Love credit for reasons, Donita Sparks would also be acceptable)

And she just wrapped up a tour.

Garbage was certainly grunge adjacent largely due to Butch Vig's production of several bands in the genre even if Garbage themselves were a little more polished.

Besides that fix, which was necessary, there's a major point I disagree with in this article: It assumes that critical history of these musical movements somehow relates to how we expertienced them firsthand, and it absolutely farking doesn't.  Take the notion that Spin magazine covers were somehow indicative of the music scene in any real way... they absolutely were NOT.  No one had a farking sub to Spin as a teen or a twentry-something, we all read those "zines" the author sneers at, those are the recognition-writing you should look at when you chronicle the history of music, because that's what farking mattered.

Everyone alive then who loved music knew the women in the industry, they mattered as much as the men did, and Nirvana was mainstream and thus uncool almost immediately after Nevermind, why do you think Cobain went into such a tailspin?  The drugs were a symptom, being an uncool sellout band and being the mainstream face of a manufactured "movement" is what killed him.  And Courtney, but w/e.

We equated Riot-grrl and grunge women mostly because it was a laughable attempt at making a cooler sub-a-cultcha and we all saw it, all those ladies were feminists from the get-go.  Fark we all just thought of it as a new wave of punk, mostly, all of it, girls and guys alike.  Sonic Youth? Newer wave.  Sleater-Kinney?  New-new-wave punk.  It was only later people took critical-theory exacto-knives out and tried to collage a wide, wild never-ending youth music mopvement into smaller and smaller sub-groupings of punk or rock just for new column inches in their late-to-the-party rock "journalism."

/clearly needs to write his own oral history of punk music before bright outrage fades.
//no one heard of bam bam because they never made it out of NW scene, not because of racism or sexism.  Bad management.  Also, sorry not sorry, just weren't that good. your band sucks, deal with it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "again" considering this is the first time I've seen you in the thread.

Anyway that could be said for most of the names in that article. I stand by my opinion that omitting TM is an egregious affront to an article about the women who built Grunge.
