Whichever cheese makes you the happiest, is the cheese you should use.

Depends?

Regular Burger: American
BBQ sauce on burger? cheddar
Mushrooms on burger? Swiss
Avocado/chilis on burger? Jack or PJack
Bacon crumbles? Bleu
Bacon Strips? Chef's choice or all the cheeses
Grilled onions on burger? Gruyere or Gruyere/jack mix
Morningstar Gardenburger? Nacho cheese
Brisket on burger? White cheddar
Fried egg on burger? Jack or mild cheddar
Double Burger? Cheddar and Jack (NOT Colby. Ched/jack  should only touch when melting downwards)
Eating a Royale with Cheese?? Gouda
Polarizing PB/Jalapeno Burger? Not everything has to have cheese on it

There aren't too many wrong answers here. Just depends on what you're doing with the burger.

Screw cheese, the only acceptable burger topping is raisin slaw.

Smoked gouda, onions sautéed in a balsamic vinegar, bacon jam, crisp leaf of lettuce, sharp dill pickle slices, dab of spicy ketchup.

I'll be in my grill.

Depends on the burger.

I like American on a straight up normal burger. Swiss with mushrooms and caramelized onions. Bleu cheese with cajun seasoning.

I knew mayo would appear somewhere!
Brie would be incredible on turkey burger, as would a super sharp cheddar (bonus if you blend it into mayo to give it a creamier texture).

Cheddar.

Yes, live within your means. But the asnwer is cheddar. Always cheddar. If you use Kraft I feel bad for you son, but I got 99 problems, and my cholesterol is one, but other wise I got 98 problems and cheese prices ain't one.

100% - I'm currently on a Pepper Jack kick. I also have cheddar, Swiss, and American for those who wish them.

really depends on the toppings. I typically go with provolone or baby Swiss. If it's a bacon cheeseburger I go with Sargento Smokehouse Cheddar.

Agree! From previous threads - it melts "creamy" like American, but is a little sharper and does not have that "sticky rubber" consistency that most mass-produced cheeses seem to have now. Hope they never change the recipe!

My favorite grill master tells me that leftover jalapeño poppers with cream cheese can be sliced to top a burger. I don't remember seeing that on the grill, but I believe it would be good.

I now doubt all knowledge of anyone who claims to be a master in any sort of cooking thinking there are such things as leftover jalapeno poppers.

I'm lactose intolerant so my choices of melty cheese are limited. I've got swiss, cheddar-gruyer, Gouda and that's it. If I'm eating out swiss is my only option.

This is the most correctest answer, of course.

Not personally fond of bleus on burgers, though. To my tastes, it can overpower all the other burger-y flavors too much. Practically anything else and I'm delighted.

The only cheeses I ever use on burgers are:
American
Pepper Jack
Cream Cheese

Which one I use depends on other toppings. But those three are all I need.

Also, THE ANSWER is american.

BUT feel free to add a slice of melty ANYTHING on top, like pepper jack or real cheddar.

It's a holiday weekend, after all!
