No one feels the slightest bit guilty using green lasers to blind a drone. Nor do they feel guilty shooting one down

Who will they send to a drone riot?  Or worse, a criminal drone dropping acid or poison onto a crowd, where the police drone is used just to capture the carnage which will show up on national TV.

Ragin' Asian: I predict a newfound interest in urban falconry.

I remember reading that bird attacks are an issue for drone users working for mining companies in Africa.  They regularly lose these devices, which can run into 6 figures.

on a personal note, ive had flocks of smaller birds swarm my mavic pro and while they never attacked, they certainly showed an interest.  got some pretty cool footage of it.

Fortunately, the police have never abused their power. I'm sure this will never be used in a way that will infringe on a person's Fourth Amendment rights. Just like they've never used their riot gear on peaceful protestors. Or their tasers on someone that had the audacity to talk back. Or their guns for shooting a black kid because he was big and scary.

I was contemplating this a couple of weeks ago as the natural extension of civil emergency response.

A drone can be on standby on a wireless charging pad at a police/fire department/EMS building, and/or stationed at dedicated launch facilities scattered around a community.

A 911 call comes in, and the nearest drone is dispatched in lieu of or in conjunction with first responders.  The drone operator surveys the area and determines how many and what kind of emergency services should initially respond.  Car accident?  How bad?  How many vehicles?  Is there fire?  Hazmat spill?  Are wreckers needed? How badly is traffic snarled?  What's the best route for fire/EMS/police to get to the site?

The drone can also get there and document the scene as well as the actions of the first responders, at least until the battery runs low..  I'm thinking a bird's eye view to supplement police body and dashboard cams.

The drone could also land and let the dispatcher converse with passers-by that may be rendering aid or may have witnessed the event.

In addition, it will enable the police to track down people that might be fleeing the scene.

What if birds think drones are birds but there's one bird claiming that drones aren't real that the other birds think is some elaborate joke.

Great, and how we ever know which cop is operating the drone? Just like stop light cameras. Will they need a sworn officer to operate the drone so the drone video footage can be used to enforce the law? Or can an officer just review the footage later to swear out a complaint?

They could have a squad based out of Dunkin' donuts.

In my opinion, the best use of drones for police is the ability to create 3D photogrammetry imagery of things like crash scenes or crime scenes. Instead of cops taking 3-4 hours to do a half ass job of taking pictures and measurements, a drone can photo survey the entire scene in minutes. That data can be turned into a 3D photogrammetry model that not only gives the ability to see the scene from any angle but a very accurate way to be able to measure anything at the scene.

A wonderful view of a future that can't happen until society finds a cure for assholism and administers it to most of the populace, police and authorities included and especially.

Three years ago, Mrs. Alt was staying at the Hilton Ft Lauderdale with two of her girlfriends. They were in a room facing the beach on the 8-9th floor. They had just gotten back from the beach and taking turns in the shower etc. Mrs. Alt was just wearing panties doing her hair when she looked out the window and saw a small drone hovering right at the balcony looking in the room through the slider doors. She tells her girlfriends and the drone just hung there for a few moments and then stated to descend. They went out on the balcony and saw a couple of people on the edge of the sand by the pool standing around a guy with an iPad controller looking up at them.

She called me and told me what happened and asked me what she should do. I told her to call down to the hotel security and let them know that there was some people using a drone to looking into the rooms. I told her not to expect anything to come of it, but at least the hotel security could run off the pervs. Small drones are the perfect voyeur camera.

How about instead you spend that money on sending mental health professionals out on calls so police stop murdering innocent people who are in a mental health crisis or in need of assistance and not a bullet?

Actually, this would sometimes help with that. You can talk to someone without putting an officer in a position where they might be/feel attacked. Of course, with some people, it might make it worse if they're delusional/paranoid.

That would be the ideal situation, but with everything we've seen/heard about police in the last few years, do you believe that is how these will be utilized?

That would be responsible use of police resources.
