 So they're treating their employees like GoDaddy treats theirs. Makes sense, exploit internal workers who don't know what they're worth until they're not able to work anymore. Then fire them for failing to meet impossible deadlines.

Really, that's the only reason any truly successful corporation does anything: they believe the action taken will make them more money.

The problem with that is that it's short-sighted.  Sure, they'll save a bit of money, but in the long term they've just told all their employees that they're expendable.  Which incentivizes the veterans to look for employment elsewhere and deters new recruits.

Loyalty is key to leadership.  Workers aren't loyal to you unless you give them a reason to be, and you won't get any more than the bare minimum out of most workers unless they're loyal to you.  If you're not loyal to them, or at least direct, they won't be loyal to you.

Also, the self selecting nature of the layoffs is chaotic.  If I was told I had to get rid of a few of my workers due to an economic downturn, I would redo my annual performance reviews and let go of the people who got the lowest score.  Or possibly go by seniority to remove any possibility of bias.  In any case I would sit down with anyone I was laying off and explain why they were being let go, and I'd offer them a letter of recommendation.

Yep, S.O.P. for forcing employees who aren't an immediate money/liability risk out the door. Stick them somewhere shiatty, or give them impossible goals, drive them to the brink of suicide, and they quit.

Company unsuccessful: firings because employees have failed the company and the whole reason things didn't work. And bonuses for the C-suite so they will do better next year!

I knew someone involved in a tech merger where they were going through something like this. They made a fake email that looked like it was from company brass with a list of names for stay and go. Of course, they tried to make it the opposite of what they thought reality was. They took it to the office copier which had a memory function. They next time someone made a copy, it came out on the back of their sheet. It spread through the office like wildfire, management was pissed. Of course they started issuing statements on it being fake and not to believe it, but the damage was done. Much amusement was had. And while the correct person was suspected, no proof could be found so :D
