In other news, Google is gathering our medical data and will continue to track the rest of us. That's not the flex you think it is Google.

This is cool, but I'll believe they mean it when the inevitable subpoenas get rebuffed. People searching for such things should use duckduckgo instead. Just ask all the people who buy ghost gun components online.

It's just a condition of signing up to Google, isn't it? Why do people let their phones track their locations is the question I always wonder. You can just turn it off.

FTFY.  Tracking via GPS can be turned off.  Tracking by nearby wifi SIDs, have to check how that's doing lately (though Google has in the past turned it on without notification for people who had selected to have it off) and triangulation via cell towers cannot be disabled.  Could be fuzzed a bit more, but there are limits.

Because that is literally the business they're in. They collect data. They use the data to make business decisions. You can opt our or not use their services. Pretty sure you can still use most Google products without sharing location. They'll work like dog doo, but hey, at least the man doesn't know you're getting happy endings and cheesesteaks every Tuesday. But Visa does.

Thanks, good correction, my understanding is that triangulation via cell towers would not be sufficiently specific to locate somebody at a medical centre though, which is what TFA is about. I agree with your point that it can't be disabled and has been used to confirm that people have been in certain areas in criminal investigations, but it doesn't confirm location to a specific building like most people's phones are doing constantly because they enable GPS.

// I only use it ironically, not because I have something to hide, but because ... well irony.

We need more tech providers to perform these cloaking services. For everybody. Not just reporters and famous people.

For instance, right-wing media kept using WaPo reporter Taylor Lorenz's old tweets against her. Even after she deleted the tweets, mean people were still bringing them up, because the tweets were still available on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine

Thankfully the Internet Archive worked with Taylor Lorenz to permanently delete her tweets from the Wayback machine. Now she can delete tweets, and nobody can see what she said.

I look forward to the time when this is available to all of us.

The assisted gps servers tend to collect lots of data.  My local carrier will let traffic go to google's agps server without a SIM card in the phone.  Some phones send the last known position as well as the cell towers it can see and relative signal strength.  Some phones seem to do that quite often.  There is a proxy that lets you find out what you phone sends if you can trick it into using a different server name.

Whenever I hear someone complain that the government is trying to get their information to track them I tell them to look up a private company called Acxiom.

Have you ever bought anything using a credit card? Yes? They already have all your information then.

You don't understand The MAGAts were saying mean things about Taylor Lorenz though. You can't possibly imagine how hurtful that must have been for her. Even worse, they were using her own words against her. That's not fair.

We need to protect the Taylor Lorenzes of the world, and ourselves, from the MAGAts.

Imagine a world where we can speak our minds, and be free from fear that our words can be used by the MAGAts to mock us later.

Taylor Lorenz has showed us the way. I have reached out to the Wayback Machine to see if they will delete my tweets as well, but I have not gotten any response yet.

Oh dear.... people seem to be developmentally disabled and not really understanding that they're not really deleting things, they're making them "less available". Guarantee that when they get a subpoena all those "deleted" records will magically turn up from less than 1 day old backups. Corpolord will not allow profits to be harmed to protect others. If you think they will then you fundamentally do not understand how the US works.

By doing saying so, they're hoping not to diminish the bidding to run ads to people who place other medical related searches. Between masses of protestors and activists looking into those topics, and advertisers being possibly unwilling to be exposed as paying for those results, it's in their interest to separate information about those results from the data stream.

No Law, No Change. Words only mean something when tested and Alphabet has less than 0 spine to spare for their "totally not us" subsidiary called "Google". If you think personal searches matter more than ads to the engine then you've missed how the world works these days by choice.

Install Uber? guess what, unless you turn off location on your phone Uber knows where you are at all times and sells that info to others. Google? well they get to crawl you mailbox all day long and record when you don't want spam and when you just ignore it. If they don't get an FTC ruling saying they can't sell the contents of your mailbox they won't stop doing it.

No Privacy Laws? No change in you being the product that can be sold to cops by proxy so there's "deniability"

If you aren't paying for the service, it isn't the product. You are, to be sold to marketoids.

This has been known since the dawn of ads on the Internet.
