The European Commission has put forward seven key reforms that Ukraine needs to carry out before the end of the year. The list includes the appointment of judges for the Constitutional Court, the fight against corruption and money laundering, the protection of national minorities and the implementation of a law meant to curb the excessive influence of oligarchs in the economy.

[...]

Officially a candidate country, Ukraine now enters the long, arduous and complex of EU accession, a process that can take several years and even decades.

Okay, this is all very hopeful and good. But, I'm seeing a discrepancy here.

I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea for the US to see if it can join... the application process alone looks like it might fix a few problems.

Zelenskyy: Putin's croaked!

[Chamber observes thirty seconds of silence.]

They have a pair of gas lines, but oil is transferred by rail tankers at the border because they have different rail gauges. China is a long way from the oil fields.

So many scenes in the first season are genuinely funny!

The stalling the meeting with the IMF for days with the music and coordinated vodka shots slayed me.

Oksana Skovoroda ended up being my favorite character. I'd love to be that smart and quick-thinking when I grow up.

It's not a single checklist and done -- it's a bunch of phases, each of which needs to be completed and evaluated. That list of 7 items to be completed by the end of the year is just their FIRST to-do list, to get ready for phase 2.

Even before the war, it would be years before Ukraine could be ready to be admitted. I appreciate the gesture, but this is mostly posturing. Ukraine is not going to join the EU anytime soon. Years and years of "not anytime soon" if ever.

Not really. The full process takes years, and Ukraine now until the end of the year to meet the first set of conditions required for full membership to proceed.
