That's.... interesting. Republicans really are desperate. They're hiding behind walls of security and cameras while hoping  threats and intimidation will keep women in line.
But nobody wants to outlaw abortion, and the GOP lack even the support of their own minions on this issue.
It's one thing to pass a law. It's another to actually enforce it.

Legal farkers?

If I remember correctly, states control intrastate commerce. But Congress regulates interstate commerce under the Constitution.

Say state X bans abortion. Can state X prosecute people of state X who travel to another state where abortion is legal to get an abortion? I'm sure this is being discussed, but I must have missed it so far. My guess is that this will be the rationale for an attempted federal ban on abortion should the GQP gain full control. *throws salt over shoulder*

I'm sure that will be the next attempted step beyond what TFA is describing...

I bet if a state banned all gun sales and a city announced they'd help residents travel to another state to buy guns they'd be okay with it...

The Party likes freedom in the way Orwell wrote about writing freedom.

Did you know they increased the chocolate ration from 1 to 0.5?

Oh, if they'd only thought about the shiatstorm they were going to unleash with this one.

Any effort to regulate commercial traffic between the states triggers the Dormant Commerce Clause which lets Congress step in and decide whether a law disproportionately impacts the residents of a state to the benefit or detriment of another state.

But what, Gyrfalcon, is the commercial traffic? Well, you don't just go get an abortion. You have to, you know, travel there. And stay in hotels, and eat in restaurants, and do all the other things one does when one travels. You know, commerce.

And it impacts the Full Faith & Credit Clause, and the Privileges and Immunities Clause. These are all legislative powers, not judicial or executive. So Congress gets to weigh in, not the judiciary or the president. Citizens are allowed to freely travel, and nobody gets to tell us we can't. For any reason. Even criminals on parole can travel if they ask the right way.

This is going to be a f*cking mess. It would have been easier to just leave Roe in place, you fools.

It's like it's going to require some sort of covert, underground system in order to provide rights to those oppressed under conservative rule.

Almost like some sort of express railway, but in a secret location where it can't be easily observed...

CSB: was working as the company admin for HHC (Headquarters and Headquarters Company) of my unit. It was October and the R&I (Retention and integration) platoon was running a haunted house to raise funds for the FRG (family readiness group). As company admin my 1SG didn't want me to volunteer because volunteers got the next day off from work to recover and basically he needed me in the office. My platoon SGT came by and tried to voluntold me to work at the haunted house. My response, "Sorry SGT, that's isn't going to happen my wife wants me home instead."

You would think that would be the end of it but PSG had to look tough and says, "fortheloveof, you just need to tell your wife how it is and take charge and do this."

Without looking up from my keyboard I retort, "That's a fascinating theory SGT, should I call your wife and share it with her?"

He backed down and begged 1SG to not let me call his wife.

Anywho, any man that thinks he can control a woman or keep her in line is an idiot.

Everyone loves the idea of an authoritarian government when their party is the one trampling people's rights. They get to feel strong and say "fark your feelings".

Since the state would claim the pregnant woman is trafficking a child across state lines, in order to kill them, standing is hardly a tough question. The case law has effectively made the words embryo and foetus into different words for a legal person.

Since rightwingers were the Confederate slave-staters, this is just borrowing from their 'Escaped slave' playbook they've dusted off.

2022-07-01 10:23:23 PM
The surreal thing about this is now we have women in states subject to prosecution should they leave the boundaries. Pregnant or not, who is to say that they are not somehow skirting the law and preemptively bar them from going?

Before RvW it was not like this. Now women and girls will be hunted and scrutinized in the most violating way from borders of Christofacist states, physically and electronically monitored. We are witnessing a return to slave states. I can't get any better before this gets worse.

'Freedom' is a Republican euphemism for white supremacy. As are the terms free speech, tradition, family values, law and order, patriotism and liberty.

Sorry, 'libety.'

Oh hey, did not expect to see you here.

Just to point out if you work for the government you do get maternity and paternity leave, the US doesn't require private employers to do so (but it should).

If we could get people to not be stupid we could have universal healthcare, but we all know people will be stupid all over the world.

You morons realize that the powers that be are pitting the populace against itself in hopes that they will kill each other off so they don't have to pay unemployment, benefits, right? They have been eliminating your jobs through technology for years, they are just hoping that you don't notice as they take the remaining jobs away while they turn the final screw. The ones that remain, they hope they either kill themselves or each other so they don't have to pay you out for unemployment, Social Security or both.

Enjoy the dance, puppets!

Why not? This is an issue that is frankly insane, especially when viewed from this side of the pond. Considering our head of state is also the head of the church, and the archbishops sit in our upper house, we actually keep religion out of our politics. Abortion, birth control etc aren't even issues here.

Our religious loonies left the country a few hundred years ago. I wonder where they went.....?

Didn't the Aetherius Society start in England? I remember driving by their space church every time in and out of Fulham on the way to Heathrow. Seems like there is a real undercurrent of loony that our countries still share even after 200+ years.

Those I interstate commerce cases will be interesting to watch. If not for all the deaths and permanent psychological damage women will have to go through.
Not to mention the rising death rates of infants and children since the states with the most strict anti-abortion laws are notorious for not taking care of humans after they leave the womb.

2022-07-01 11:45:20 PM
Wait, I just had an idea that could solve all of this. since this is wholly based on religious ideology, how about the people who don't want to have abortions don't have to have them?  And the people who have no problem with abortion can get one? Then, everyone is happy and no is forced to do anything they don't want to.
You know, like the way things were a couple weeks ago.

Jewish Law is for Jews. The Quran says "We do not worship what you worship. You do not worship what we worship. Into you your way and to us ours " Jesus requires that you hate your family and love only him and offers only death and torture to anyone who isn't utterly devoted.
