i would like to limit the power wielded by our government to those that would use it responsibly
2004-12-03 01:24:45 PM
Who appointed this idiot to the CIA in the first place??

Oh wait a second. We aren't supposed to ask those questions. We aren't supposed to say that Tenet's first job was on Bill Clinton's national security transition team. We aren't supposed to say that Tenet's second job was on the national security council under Bill Clinton. We aren't supposed to say that Tenet's third job was director of the CIA, appointed by Bill Clinton.

No no, block all of that out. This is all Bush's fault.

Here's his bio by the way:
2004-12-03 01:32:29 PM
enave are we also supposed to ignore the fact that if he proposed this under clinton he would have been fired
2004-12-03 01:38:39 PM
This is completely idiotic, especially when our government has our goddamn voting machines on a freaking windows server.

"Hey, we've got these valuable resource that makes shiatloads of money-- quick, constrain it!"
2004-12-03 01:39:33 PM
I always use the internet responsibly. Hell, even as I type this, I have a condom on.
2004-12-03 01:50:58 PM
2004-12-03 01:24:45 PM enave

Thank you for that absolutely unnecessary, unwarranted, childish display of outrage.

Do you realize you're taking issue with a question posed in your own post? Who are you talking to?
2004-12-03 01:56:15 PM

Nice flamebait... Way to stard a thread!
2004-12-03 02:03:18 PM
My first approved submission... and a flame war before it hits the main page!

/so proud :)
2004-12-03 02:10:37 PM
It's a good feeling isn't it iccky

However, my article had a problem in it that I didn't notice, so I felt kinda bad.

You want some popcorn for the entertainment?
2004-12-03 03:00:51 PM
So what you're telling me is that he doesn't want you surfing the web unless you're wearing a tinfoil hat?
2004-12-03 03:34:04 PM
Big Brother is watching you!
2004-12-03 04:16:52 PM
He wants governance and control.

/"I'm from the government and I want to help."
//how long until the Constitution is replaced by the blue screen of death?
2004-12-03 04:30:43 PM
Kazan enave are we also supposed to ignore the fact that if he proposed this under clinton he would have been fired

And your proof is what?

For your information, Clinton signed the DCMA into law. Clinton signed the bill that extended copyrights (again) just to make Disney happy (can't have that old black and white Mickey Mouse film in the public domain, now can we)

Why on Earth would you think that Clinton would have fired this guy? He wouldn't have. My favorite Clinton quote is, "The purpose of government is to rein in the rights of the people." Another choice quote is, "We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans"

Hello? Do you honestly believe that Clinton would have fired this guy? No way!

My point, for those of you who will never get it is,

Not everything is Bush's fault.

Do I think Bush is a saint? Hell no! I didn't vote for him. But please, for the love of god, stop laying every farking problem at his feet.

"OMG!!!1 Chimpy McChimpsalot is so farking teh geh. Hes praboly luving Tenet 4 this! I HATE TEH BUSSH NE1 But BUsh NE1 But Bush!!!!"

My point ladies and gentlemen, is that Tenet would have said this even if Clinton was still president, even if Kerry was president. And both clinton and kerry, and for that matter Bush, will be happy to support regulation of the Internet. Consider this a reality check.
2004-12-03 04:38:26 PM

Find one post on here, or anything in the headline, implying this is Bush's fault.
2004-12-03 05:25:01 PM
So I suppose this means 97% of the world will be denied access to the Internet including:
- AOL members
- Users of Microsoft Windows (pick any version)
- Anyone with a wireless router that has "linksys" as the SSID for more than a hour.
2004-12-03 05:32:26 PM
This isn't my first day on fark, thanks. I'm just heading certain people off at the pass.

The implication for many people will be that this is a bush administration official and that this is bush administration policy. Where is the harm in me pointing out that this guy was from the last administration and that this policy is very much in line with how the last admin did things? Is there a problem with that?
2004-12-03 05:38:16 PM

When you outline in red that something is not Bush's fault, it looks pretty damn silly when nobody has said that it was Bush's fault. Tenet, as I recall, was a scapegoat who got axed, and is now pretty much distanced from the Bush administration, so I don't see where the connection is. This is just another random grey man mouthing off.

You do yourself more harm than good with a preemptive strike-- you look kinda out there.
2004-12-03 06:26:07 PM
Funny how this turned into a political flamewar (the lowest form of flamewar there is BTW) when this guy isn't currently in any administration.
2004-12-03 06:28:07 PM

I'm just heading certain people off at the pass.

Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy. In an effort to thwart the "it's Bush's fault" crowd, you've become part of the "it's Clinton's fault" crowd. Is that any better or more logical?

Just admit you're having a bad day and drop it.
2004-12-03 06:47:17 PM
And IMO this is a misleading headline. Tenet is talking about limiting access to companies and organizations that don't take responsibility for the security of their data.

In other words, Bank X can't offer online banking until it meets some minimum standard of security for its customers' personal data.

While that brings about the unpleasant scenario of the government setting security standards for private businesses, it's completely unrelated to your right to surf for pr0n.
2004-12-03 07:19:34 PM
oh jesus christ people. This story has been posted to total fark three times. Have a look at the other threads. Here's a choice quote:

2004-12-03 10:54:52 AM leathermidget [TotalFark]

Welcome to the American Reich
Papiere! Schnell, Schnell!

Welcome to the American Reich? Isn't that what the lefties say about Bush every 30 seconds or so? Do you honestly think that if I hadn't brought it up, nobody would have mentioned Bush? You'd have to be crazy to think that.

Or if you like, head over the thread:forum=10 2&topic_id=1040297&mesg_id=1040297

I didn't post there. Oh no. They started bashing bush on their own.

So That's What Junior Meant By "Internets"

Junior is Bush BTW.

When I raised the possibility of them shutting down DU I was laughed at

OMG! teh repulikkkans are coming 4 me!

Hello? Are we on the same planet? Anything that the government does is an excuse to say that bush is out to get us. I'm dead on in "heading this off at the pass"

Besides, it's silly is it to condemn me for stating a *fact* That's all I did. I stated a fact. This guy is one of clinton's boys. It's a fact. If you weren't going to blame bush then what exactly is the problem? Just ignore me. Further down the thread, someone else will suggest that ashcroft's jack-booted thugs are going to break down your door for using the internet. Hopefully someone will have the intellegence to read what I wrote.
2004-12-03 07:31:24 PM
enave are we also supposed to ignore the fact that if he proposed this under clinton he would have been fired

I don't know. Under Clinton the DMCA was passed... a bill that is not even internally consistent, let alone sensible.
2004-12-03 07:32:14 PM
But... I am already productive online. I am downloading pr0n, surfing Fark and instant messaging all at the same time. Doesn't that count for anything?
2004-12-03 07:37:34 PM
The implication for many people will be that this is a bush administration official and that this is bush administration policy.

In the overall scheme of things, who appointed this person is irrelevant. They could have done the job asked of them by Bill Clinton in the 90s and do the job asked of them by Bush now.

This isn't to say that I connect Bush with any of this, just that it's impossible to prove that the political climate during the last 4 years had no effect on this person's outlook and decision-making.

Seriously though, it's usually good form to attack people in the thread you're posting in, rather than responding to people in a previous thread.
2004-12-03 07:40:08 PM
This is never going to happen. AOL would vanish instantly if this passed.
2004-12-03 08:04:29 PM
A plane has just hit the second internet! :(
2004-12-03 08:05:41 PM
AOL is vanishing. I can wait to piss on it's grave
2004-12-03 08:05:43 PM
Who cares if he was appointed by Clinton? It's this kind of partisan crap that keeps citizens at each others' throats and the government free of any real scrutiny.
2004-12-03 08:06:09 PM
kazan just owned enave !!!! OWNED TOTALLY
2004-12-03 08:07:03 PM
If you ask me, the internet, simply because of it's egalitaritan, unmoderated nature, is the ultimate fulfillment of the democratic ideal, and anyone trying to do such a thing can't be happy with democracy...

That said, I know if the government tried such a thing, they'd be facing MASSIVE revolts that would make Iraq seem like a walkover and probably lead to the dissolution of the union, so I'm not too worried ^_^
2004-12-03 08:07:07 PM
This was the guy who didn't see 9/11 coming and who said the CIA intel saying Iraq had WMD's was a "slam dunk".

He was forced out of the CIA he was such a f*ckup. Pay no attention to him, he has no say over anything.
2004-12-03 08:07:20 PM

Your real problem is that you're arguing fark-lite style.

This is your first day. I understand that.

But to automatically jump to the political flamewar? Come on.
2004-12-03 08:07:45 PM
From what I've discerned from this thread, this looks like Bush's fault.
2004-12-03 08:08:32 PM
This is getting ridiculous.
2004-12-03 08:09:05 PM
i have always gotten a kick out of how the government likes to try and find a way to control something that is essentially not theirs. Are you kidding me control the internet? more likely prevent americans from accessing what ever they want. trade freedom for security? eh no thanks i'll take my chances
2004-12-03 08:09:35 PM
Regardless of whether or not the government actually tries to enact such rules, they will never work. It's like trying to eliminate pr0n and spam.
2004-12-03 08:10:16 PM
If the irresponsible were restricted access to the internet, most of us IT folks would be out of a job.
2004-12-03 08:10:30 PM
Since Tenet called the internets the "Wild Wild West" can we now use Kool Moe Dee's song as our theme song?
2004-12-03 08:10:50 PM
My point, for those of you who will never get it is,

Not everything is Bush's fault.

[image from too old to be available]

MY point, for those of you who are in such an unfathomable well of self pity that you'll never get it, is that when you bring up Bush/Clinton for no good Goddamned reason, YOU PERPETUATE WHAT IT IS YOU CLAIM TO BE FIGHTING.

Put down the keyboard, walk over to the mirror. See that? THAT'S the problem.
2004-12-03 08:11:01 PM
You people calling enave a partisan moran are just mad that you didn't get an exclusive half hour to somehow connect Bush to this, as per usual on these kinds of threads
2004-12-03 08:11:34 PM
2004-12-03 07:19:34 PM enave

If you weren't going to blame bush then what exactly is the problem?

The problem is that you're arguing against no one in this thread but yourself. I haven't read the other threads on this topic and I certainly have no idea what's going on over at DU. You're outraged over something that hasn't happened yet. It's farking ridiculous and reflects poorly on you.
2004-12-03 08:11:36 PM
Don't blame me, I voted for Kerry.
2004-12-03 08:11:38 PM
I just want to see the usage of air limited to those who will use it responsibly.

/Tenet suddenly asphyxiates.
2004-12-03 08:12:30 PM
And for the record, I don't think Clinton or Bush would ever do this
2004-12-03 08:12:41 PM
Just ignore me.

Noted and done, good sir.
2004-12-03 08:12:52 PM
Enave I have to congradulate you on a good post that Farkers have been tearing apart, because they lack the civility to just accept that your post was in fact legitimate (yeah, cause nobody would have blamed bush... I can almost see the Mission Accomplished picture now) and that it saved this from being a 300 plus post thread.
2004-12-03 08:13:44 PM
enave is a nazi.

/godwin flamewars are more fun that bush flamewars.
2004-12-03 08:13:58 PM
liter for life here, enave simmer down. cornflakes, yours, urine, who?

/Is that grounds to take away my internets?
//Who's in charge of this data transfer anyway?
2004-12-03 08:14:43 PM
2004-12-03 08:09:35 PM Ral

Regardless of whether or not the government actually tries to enact such rules, they will never work. It's like trying to eliminate pr0n and spam.

Nothing a few tele-screens can't fix.....
2004-12-03 08:14:43 PM
by the way... i blame tenet. because, you know, hes the one the articles about.

of course, i can read, so i may have an unfair advantage.
