If voting didn't work, in the long run, then republicans wouldn't be trying to ban it across the US

There's -one- thing that may slow the degradation down. The Supreme Court year is over, and doesn't start again until the beginning of October - right before Election Day. If they drop too much bullshiat in October, it could result in a super-majority... which means they're likely to wait until November to continue the assault, so there's a decent chance there's one final election in which to try to stop the worst of this, if the Dems act FAST after getting a real majority.

The fate of the Republic quite possibly hinges on this.

CNN anchor Ana Cabrera reported that Sinema's office told her, that despite President Joe Biden supporting such an effort, the senator "is still opposed to gutting the filibuster on any topic including on reproductive rights."

Who said anything about gutting the filibuster?  How about returning to the old rules?  How about a carve out?

What a pair of assholes.  Just worthless.

And no end in sight.

These abuses of power could conceivably last an entire generation.

America learned the wrong lesson from ww2.  We're full steam ahead on a course set for tyranny.

We'll be Balkanized by 2036, if not officially, certainly politically.

Sinema will get primaried, and lose her primary. in 2026.  she lied about who she is to the voters of AZ. they elected a more liberal senator than who she CLAIMED to be

Manchin well... it's WV.  we just need to get more senators to make his ass not matter beyond "Turtle isn't in charge"

The same fate that befalls any culture high on its own hubris.

It's all over but the shouting.  There is no recourse for compromise.  The only solution is dissolution.

California will be the first to go, in my opinion.

The 46 actual Dems in the senate (+ Bernie & Angus) absolutely must go on the record saying they'll scrap the filibuster for at least voting and reproductive rights. Rock solid commitments. And then the caucus needs 2 more votes to negate Sinemanchin.

Get those commitments from Fetterman, Ryan, etc. Lay the consequences out for voters: you put 2+ more Dems in the Senate, we explicitly protect your rights under federal law.

It's dying, quickly.
Not sure how many years we have left.
If the Republicans take over Congress and the White House it's game over.
Not even sure that matters, as 6-3 SCOTUS seems to run the country now anyway.

If you add enough justices to make a 7-6 instead of a 6-3, then the assault stops. To add justices, you need congressional approval. To get approval, you need an actual majority, which means one that Manchin and Sinema aren't included in the count of. Justices serve for life, impeachment is a broken process that has NEVER worked in the history of the US, and since the current court is ignoring all precedent to do whatever they damn well please, the new 13 member court can do the same to cancel the damage that the current court is doing. Let's stop pretending the court has any remaining integrity.

So yeah, I understand just fine. We have one final chance to undo Yertle's breaking of the court, because otherwise future elections aren't likely to make a non-red majority a thing that can even happen. Even that's a long shot, but it's a chance.

Which is exactly why I called the end game when Cunningham conceded to Tillis. From that moment, the Georgia special election didn't matter for the legislative agenda and all we could ever expect from Manchin was a couple judicial appointments which wouldn't matter until Manchin was dead anyway.

I even got a ban for joking about Hillary calling her wetworks squad in a panic to call them off of killing Manchin that night.

So yeah, all eyes on PA. As the MAGAt memes say, "the doctor or the patient?"

Asking cause I legitimately don't have an answer for this: Do these chucklefarks vote with their own party often enough to justify keeping them? If not, can they legally/procedurally be shown the door?

I know they're part of the Democratic "majority," but I would think there's little point if their votes never materialize. I'm thinking that (if they in fact can be removed from the party) higher-ups are keeping them around just in case, or something of that nature. Or perhaps other votes I'm not familiar with have been aligned?

2022-06-30 10:57:16 PM
I am still not convinced these two aren't Republican moles. Them and Collins.

If the D's happen to gain seats in the midterms, Manchin and Sinema's political prospects are diminished greatly. They have a lot of visibility and power, always being the swing votes of the majority. If the D's get a majority without them, they're little more than traitors still on the payroll. They'll be marginalized as their votes cannot be trusted.

The only thing sadder is this incessant appeal to the rule of law that Democrats don't realize no longer matters.

The Jan 6 Committee will finish its barking, and no one in Trump's orbit will ultimately pay any penalty.

Get actual Democrats in their districts that'll actually do a farking thing beyond just "lulzno" anything that isn't a GQP talking point and hang this issue around their necks like a goddammed lead weight so heavy they can't possibly win against it. The people that voted for both these shiatstains have already been voicing their anger over their inaction, this should seal their fates to either run as the GQP they are or get shoved into the toilet.

The problem is that West Virginia and Arizona aren't likely to elect anyone more liberal. In the case of WV, its a goddamn miracle that ANYONE with a D got elected.

So the question becomes, would you rather have 2 votes that you can't rely on, or 2 votes that you definitely know will go against you?

Just two years from now if I've got that right.  She's definitely getting challenged in a primary though.  You have to wonder what she's thinking.  Screwing the party and pretty much daring democrats to kick her out.  She seems delusional enough to believe she'll have a shot at a presidential nomination someday.

People still have this delusion that a President can wield their party into lockstep. Recently, one of those delusional folks tried to cite Johnson's ability to whip the vote and the voting rights act. What's the reality?

Fark user imageView Full Size

That's right, he got a larger percentage of republican support than democratic support. Just because you're in the same nominal party doesn't mean you're an automaton.  You need a bigger majority to have actual power to drive an agenda.

2022-06-30 11:03:41 PM
Yeha but eliminating it is short sighted. If you get rid of the filibuster the GOP might try destroy the country they are currently destroying

Peki Did anyone really expect anything different from these two? They weren't gonna have a sudden change of heart just because SCOTUS did what it said it was going to do.

It's exactly what I expected.  The only mildly surprising thing is that it took them this long.
