- Cory Doctorow, Car Wars: https://limn.it/articles/car-wars/

Even if the cars haven't been hacked (and in this case, they almost certainly weren't hacked), and they're just trying to do the safest thing imaginable (and in this case, they really did fail in a way that was safer than envisioned in Doctorow's short story), things can, and will, still go awry.

Because machine learning is an art, not a science.

She was made to look like a carefree Swinger sedan: bright red, gaudy, fast.  But there were rockets under the bulges of her hood, and two fifty-caliber muzzles lurked just out of sight in the recesses beneath her headlamps; she wore a belt of five- and ten-second timed grenades across her belly; and in her trunk was a spray-tank containing a highly volatile naphthalic.

I will prove myself to them by becoming a cyborg.

Take heed, fellow futurists.

What is going to be hella funny in the year two thousaaaaaand, as this type of service becomes more and more widespread, they will go to more "remote" locations and take a few hours to even get IT (or whatever they will call their car service people). Tow truck drivers gonna be salivating. Can't wait for the lawsuits over damaged vehicles. Gonna be bonkers between the traffic cops, city hall, and city contracts.

Good luck expecting service techs to be 15 minutes away.

Maybe have a person in the car until its finished learning just like we do with human drivers.
Driverless tech is not ready and rushing it will delay it even more due to pushback when it fails.
I can't wait for the  day driving is outlawed and the cars all drive themselves.  Less accidents, traffic and pollution not to mention going to the bar will be a lot easier

Erma Gerdd: "More than a half dozen Cruise robotaxis"

I think that's based on what an editor can visually confirm from any single photograph. The most I've seen in any one photograph is seven, but it looks like from both streets, unless the cars repositioned themselves, there are at least a dozen. This lastdriverlicenseholder article, which includes photos from different angles, described the number as "at least a dozen".

What's the odds that intersection is the one that way back in time one of the AI engineers was in a old taxi and the cabbie took them off route on a ride to drive up the fare.  Remember when that was a thing that we all just accepted as part of the frustrating experience of dealing with cabbies?

I'm now wondering if when they set up their maps if this spot is some kind of origin point for that map, and on-error the cars defaulted to that origin point.

Or maybe a simpler answer:  They outsourced the path finding routines to Bethesda Studios.
