Oh wait, that was EMF. Nevermind

On the other hand, it's the only thing that'll get the ball rolling on giving some new love to our grid.

This is why I want to build a microcomputer with an e-ink display. Apple ][ power, but something you can run off a solar panel. Isolate components onto ESD matting, wrap in aluminum foil, seal in a steel box, and wrap that in aluminum too for good measure.

If I play my cards right I'll be one of the only people on the planet with a working computer. The only question will be whether it can run Doom.

If power went out for nine hours, half the population would die of boredom.

By the time it's finally restored, it'll be like Thanos had been through and recovery would be long and hard.

Forget boredom. You can sleep through that and survive. A lot of modern dwellings are so dependent on HVAC systems that they have terrible ventilation. Heatstroke all over the place.

Oh my god that map with no legend has dots and shiat!  One of those dots is near me and it's black!  Black is bad right?  Or is black good?  I'm either totally farked or just fine, I'm both terrified and relieved all at once and it's awesome.  Or terrible.  Instructions unclear, please advise.

Nah, it'll take longer than that. Texas lost power for a week and only a few hundred people died.

Ignoring the politics this is a good read and details a lot of the issues both short term and long term that would result after a large enough EMP.

Spoiler alert. A lot of people die.

TL;DR These are the areas hit in the last EM storms, and presumably most vulnerable for the next storm.

After the last power outage, I bought one of these, a Victory coffee/wheat grinder, wheat berries and coffee beans, and a couple tins of denatured alcohol fuel.  When the power grid goes down there will be a LOT of coffee addicts wandering around. I won't be one of them.

The only fallacy in that cartoon is the people reading it who think they won't be one of the billions of people to starve to death/die from illness in the first year.

/everyone thinks THEY are the road warrior

Well, their grid can go down if someone around one of the substations sneezes

Well, hopefully we can off more Texans next time
