In all fields.

Legislation should come from Congress, not SCOTUS.

This is exactly the language the right was using about the court up until about five minutes ago. It's as legitimate now as it was then.

"...these illegitimate, illegal, and unconstitutional dictates of a partisan, willful Supreme Court."

They won. Barring a miracle in November, there's literally nothing our form of government affords us to do to change this.

If they had held up the budget and shut down the government at a few key moments, they had a chance of at least slowing it if not stopping it.

They chose not to. And that's where we are. We can't go back in time.

I do not see a way out of this where we can undo all they have done. And if they gain control of power again, they only have to tidy up a few things and they will have permanent control for decades.

It was a nice Republic, but we were not able to keep it. The Great Experiment is over.

As Sotomayor said last week : It took eight years and a war to fix Dred Scott.  People should make sure they're on the right side of the line before their kids get conscripted.

Again, she's right. Put Dems in the Senate who will do the bold action we need, replace Dem leadership in Congress, send more progressive Dems to the House.

People get so worked up about this stuff.

While everything they did is a farking tragedy and wrong and blah blah blah, the right is pushing things too far. And assassinating people won't slow it down.

What we're seeing is the right overreaching the same way they did in CA and they've been politically crippled since. That's the end result nationally. That's where this will end up.

Things look bleak now, but just wait. The tide will turn on them. People are gonna say nuh uh the right will never turn on each other. Remember those stories about the alt right chicks being upset their alt right dudes treated them like shiat? It's gonna be like that. These guys are gonna push and push and when they're done it'll be old white men on one side and everyone else on the other...

They accomplished this feat in California and they're gonna do it nationally. Just watch

She's right, you know.

We have perjurers serving on the Supreme Court.

We have seditious conspirators serving in Congress.

And nothing seems to be happening to stop them from trampling democracy.

Thoreny: Legislation should come from Congress, not SCOTUS.

Rights should be enshrined in the Constitution.  It's complete and utter bullshiat that they should be simply codified as part of a legislative session only to be removed in another.  But here we are, with rights really being nothing of the sort as a proper Constitutional Convention is never going to happen and if it did, with our luck, it would be all guns and Jesus and murder the browns, queers, Democrats, etc.

You mean like the  farking coup attempt they tried over a year ago which hasn't hurt them in the slightest? Or perhaps you mean the quickly increasing amount of gerrymandering and voter suppression, or the concerted attempt to weaken core institutions of our democracy that happened for four years under TFG which GAINED him votes?

fark off.

2022-06-30 9:25:01 PM
By any standard, this has been the most gradual coup in history. The fact that too many Americans ignored what was happening until it was too late is a failure of our education in civics and critical thinking.

The fact is that this slow-motion coup is over. Right-wing zealots have won this battle, and the damage they've done to the republic will last for generations.

I hope anybody who ever voted for a Republican reflects on the fact that you are now, and definitively, a traitor to the American experiment. This nation would be better off if you would all crowd into Texas long enough for us to build a really big farking moat.

Marcus Aurelius: Right and wrong are completely out of the equation now.  This is war.

Look, here's the thing.

Everything they did, they did legally. Even if the turtle hadn't ratfarked Garland out of the job, the way it shook out, they still would have had the numbers to do what they did.

Women losing access to abortion is bad. Its really bad. But Roe v Wade was a shiatty law that even internet-favorite RGB repeatedly warned was as flimsy as a Chinese skyscraper. Trump was elected legitimately, as much as I hate to say it, so his appointments were legitimate. And they acted well within the scope of their power to overturn it.

So all you keyboard revolutionaries want to call to arms and "take your country back," go for it. You won't. You never do. I've been waiting for this glorious revolution to kick off since W.

But even if you do, don't pretend like you have the moral high ground, because you don't. Pro-lifers think abortion is killing babies and they disrupted it by voting. Hate them with every fiber in your being, but they have the moral high ground.

So you're left with two options. Either the Democratic party is totally impotent and useless, in which case, fix that. Or you really don't have the will of the people.

In either case, and why I'm not freaking out about this, that's democracy.

Normally this is the part where I remind that the 2nd is sorta like a vote-enhancer. Then again, the sides that would go to such lengths would rewrite the Constitution into something which we wouldn't recognize, so I'm not sure I'm down with that either. Maybe if extremist moderates wanted to do it? No, that didn't turn out too well last time.

How about we just keep voting and if anyone steps on your toes you blast em? It's not like we have too much longer left thanks to our new "aquirement" disease going around, so a little controlled chaos might be more appreciable entertainment than unmitigated pandemonium? Instilling a sense of responsibility into your duly elected representatives should be the order of the day, not aiming spits up their ass so they come out their mouths on the first go. Of course that might send the right message too..

Jefferson did exactly that. It even worked for a little while. Then people realized that we actually need a working judiciary, and restored funding. And a short time later Justice Marshall wrote the opinion in Marbury v. Madison and handed Jefferson his ass.

If a single party is able to take that much control, then the battleground shifts to the control of the party.  Take over the primary process, take the party seats, reform the party to what you think it should be.  There are strict rules about how they can control the government, but rules for taking internal control of the party are much more lax.  The Republican primaries are the battleground now.  Register as Republican and go break it
