Finished the story-line in Hardspace: Shipbreaker. I haven't actually left yet, but I could if I wanted to.

Got a good 6 or so hours of 7DtD in with the wife. We both have 4x4 trucks now, which are awesome. Survived another hoard night, but need to improve for the next one, as they manage to bash through a concrete block in the base (And severely damage several others).

Been playing a map of Spellcaster University in my free time. I... Think I know what I'm doing? Sorta? Dungeons still kick my ass in the game, though.

Update 6 on Satisfactory hit, so I've got that IV back in my arm.  Found some hardware lying around the house so I built a dedicated server box that I'm trying to get set up for hosting my kid's Minecraft world as well as a Satisfactory dedicated server.  That's starting to be a bigger rabbit hole than I had anticipated, but last night I found Pteradactyl Panel, so next week I'll work on getting that running.

I was never a big fan of beat-em-ups, but I have logged a lot of hours over the years in the various Smash Brothers and Primal Rage back in the day.

My obsession with Elden Ring is becoming all-consuming. I'm enjoying it even more now that I've turned off all multiplayer and no longer find myself being constantly ripped out of the experience by those stupid message signs and the ghost images of other players jumping around. I don't understand what value those add, especially since so many of the messages are deliberately wrong or misleading. I mean, I guess I can understand people wanting to do PvP or summon help or stuff like that (elements that have nothing to do with those other visual effects) but the game is so big, immersive, and beautiful that it more than stands all by itself. It's a near-perfect solo gaming experience and I really don't want to experience it any other way.

The Steam summer sale was this week.  I hoped to pick up Elden ring, but it wasn't on sale and I rarely buy games at full price.  I picked up 8 other games instead:

Air Marty- A strange Choose your own Adventure game, except mini games instead of choices.  Crappy art, janky game play and weird aesthetic, but strangely endearing.  It has a small cult following and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it at the price.

Project Lazarus - A Vampire Survivors clone with mechs and some twin stick gameplay.  Decent graphics, but missing the depth of VS, and has some pretty significant balance issues.  Looks like they are updating frequently, so it could end up pretty good in time.  Cheap too.

Door Kickers: Action Squad - I played a lot of Broforce a couple weeks ago, and picked this one up because it looked similar.  It's a solid pixelated violence game, but doesn't have the hilarity or chaos of Broforce.

Oxygen Not Included - A base building game with a lot of depth.  Lots of factors to deal with.  I'm pretty sure my colony is about to collapse due to lack of clean water, air, hygiene and morale.  But I had fun so far.  Rimworld fans would probably enjoy.

I also grabbed Sniper Elite 4, Destiny II, Deus Ex GOTY Edition and West of  Loathing, but haven't touched them yet.

Best Beat em up is Golden Axe.  I could beat it in the arcade on one quarter, and occasionally without losing lives. A++++ score.  :)

Aar1012: Started a Final Fantasy XIV trial. Up to level 10

One of us... *drool*

I reluctantly started back in November at the insistence of my (female) cousins. I'm halfway through Endwalker now.

I swore off MMOs after a brief but intense stint with WoW and EvE in the late 2000's. FFXIV was pleasantly surprising.

If you stick with it, let me know. Always happy to help out with Trials/Dungeons/Raids

Just finished Assassin's Creed Origins.  Fun game, might pick up Odyssey, we'll see.

Favorite Beat-em-ups:  The TMNT games are top notch for me.  Also a big fan of Streets of Rage, Final Fight, the D&D arcade games, and Golden Axe.

Also if we're counting them, Yakuza 0, 1, and 2 Kiwami are real good.

(Also Dynasty Warriors but that's a stretch)

Odyssey is good, but it's way too long. I put Valhalla down because it was shaping up the same way and I have too much in my queue for that.

Hell yeah. You should look up tips and tricks on YouTube when you get the time as well as explore the System menu. The game's tutorial system is decent but there are a ridiculous number of features and customization options that can help out which they avoid talking about due to worry about information overload.

And one of the less intuitive things for me is that you should make sure you visit the casino daily. You cannot lose money on the cactpot games, so they are always worth playing. The other attractions are seemingly unlucrative but there are weekly achievements that add up quickly (e.g. you get 1,000 coins for winning 5 times on a minigame). Plus they're fun if you ever find yourself queued up for a trial/duty/dungeon/raid.

Apparently I missed last week's gaming thread, so I can combine what I've been up to. It's still pretty short though.

First up, I'm back on my Star Wars Saturday bullshiat streaming Star Wars: The Old Republic on my twitch channel. This most recent session, I've been working my way through the Bounty Hunter class story. Most recently, I've been working through the Alderaan section of the story, meaning my quarry was the "Durasteel Duke," who was already dead and instead his sister was posing as him. I took the actual Duke's body as proof of my bounty contract. I'm now heading back to Nar Shaddaa to confront the overall antagonist of the first chapter of the story: Tarro Blood.

My most recent Dragon Age Inquisition update was that I had closed the breach, evacuated Haven and founded the new Inquisition at Skyhold. I've done basically nothing to advance the main plot since then, but I have been doing so, so many of the various side quests. The overarching framework is that I'm trying to do Cassandra's companion quest "Unfinished Business" since my Dalish Elf Inquisitor (who sadly, has finally found armor to cover his nipples) plans on romancing her.

To do that quest involves hunting down suspects at five different locations on the world. The first is in the Hinterlands, where I think I've done literally every side quest that doesn't involve slaying a dragon, since both dragons I've gone up against have consistently kicked my party's ass. (My party has usually been Varric, Cassandra, and Vivienne). So the first suspect was taken down quickly.

The second suspect was on the Western Approach. So, I unlocked that location at the War table, did most of the side quests there, including liberating Griffin Wing Keep (including the bridges and water supply) as well as tracking down and dealing with the source of the Darkspawn. I also judged Servis worthy of imprisonment. The second of Cassandra's suspects was already taken down.

The third of Cassandra's suspect was somewhere in the Exalted Plains, so that was the next location unlocked, and I've been slaying the undead there. I've also been doing a few of the side quests, but I'm currently being incredibly frustrated by an underground puzzle involving pillars and a rotating Elven archer statue, not helped by my party members not staying exactly where I put them...

I think I mentioned that I have new HOTAS - the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One. Since I wanted to try it out, I fired up Elite Dangerous. Despite the game seeming a lot more buggy than last time I played it (most noticeably the game would frequently freeze when dropping out of Supercruise mode), I did a couple of long journeys, including finally taking Meta-Alloys to:
Fark user imageView Full Size

So, I can theoretically start engineering my Frame Shift Drive, except I need a bunch of materials to do so. One thing I did notice, because Elite Dangerous has a control scheme for my HOTAS baked in, my Commander would be doing the same moves on his on-screen stick as I was doing on my real life stick. So I feel more connected to this guy than usual:
Fark user imageView Full Size

And just because, here's a beauty shot of my Asp Explorer auto-docking:
Fark user imageView Full Size

That's my adventures in digital gaming.

Back in the tabletop world, I decided that it had been long enough, and so it was time to set my wallet on fire. Having not played Warhammer 40,000 since 5th Edition, I lapsed because my FLGS had the 9th Edition Core Book on discount:
Fark user imageView Full Size
In addition to what's pictured here, I also picked up the Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team Core Book & Compendium, a second box of T'au Empire Fire Warriors and a T'au Empire Crisis Battlesuit box.

I'm still trying to understand how the rules of changed over the last decade so I can figure out how to build valid armies, though I'm mostly concentrating on just getting models that look cool for now. And because back in the day, I played four different armies, I have also ordered Codex Space Marines, and the Salamanders Codex Supplement. I'll probably pick up Codices for Thousand Sons and Tyranids eventually, but I'm sticking with T'au miniatures for now.

I made the usual weekly visit to Gamestop. Picked up DNF:Duel, Disgaea 6 and an Atrix mouse. For a $20 mouse, it isn't bad but it's no G-series from Logitech either. However, as it is replacing a factory mouse that came with a 10+ year old Gateway PC, it will do the job fine. Also heard from the publisher of Zengeon as to when the physical U.S. release if coming as the date is all over the place at different sites. Good news! PQube has no idea when they will have it out either.

Recently surpassed 1,400 hours of GTAV:Online where I continue to live my best life of managing my various businesses at whatever pace I feel like while making the occasional expensive purchase.

I'm closing in on a bank balance of $100,000,000 and am 24 levels away from Level 300. That's sort of a goal, of sorts for now.

I continue to chip away at Visage because that game scares the absolute f*ck out of me and I can't play it for more than 10 minutes without completely freaking out and having to stop. It's kind of love/hate, but it is done spectacularly well. Had I waited only a few weeks, I could have got it on the Steam Summer Sale, so now I feel I have to pace myself to get my $39.99 worth.

For my birthday my wife and kids bought me Mario Strikers Battle League which is very enjoyable. I haven't been online yet, which I'm sure would be a guaranteed ass kicking, but it's fun to play with the kids.

Favourite beat-em-up...hmmmm. What immediately comes to mind is the classic Final Fight on SNES. I played through that probably 2 or 3 years ago. I tried it straight up and got to the second last level or so, then I broke out the Game Genie and rampaged through the whole thing. The difficulty in that game scales until the last 2 levels where it becomes sadistically difficult to stay alive.

Another would be Comatribes that I used to play at the local convenience store way back when. I thought that game was awesome, but the SNES port is not nearly as good.

I second the earlier suggestion of Golden Axe that thing is a legend, though I'm not particularly good at it.

I picked up Shadowrun Returns, all three volumes, and while it's weird to go back to that isometric view, and all dialog in text form, its simplicity is refreshing.

Don't get me wrong, I want a new Shadowrun RPG, because the world needs a Troll Shaman with a mini-gun, but this is a nice taste, and it reminds me of the days of FF Tactics-only without the guilt trips that your team members would give you when you discharged them. And with a far less convoluted story.

It's like getting just the right amount of biscuits with your tea.

The linked game, Geneforge 1 Mutagen, is great if you'd like an old school fantasy RPG.  The graphics may be (& are) very minimal but the story/universe is unique & a hell of a lot of fun to play around in.  It's the first chapter in a five part story that follows the ongoing saga of the revolution between the Shapers (you, at least initially) & the Rebels (not so prominent in this chapter but it's laying the foundation for future shenanigans).  It's a 'lone hero' kind of story (venerable weakling developing into someone with incredible powers).  You get to decide what kind of 'Shaper' you want to be.  A Guardian, melee fighter essentially.  An Agent, a for the most part solo rogue/spy character. Or an actual Shaper (all three are known as 'Shapers' to those without the ability to 'shape'), someone who can develop and build their own army/bodyguards through DNA manipulation.  (the revolution throughout the series is the conflict between the Shapers who want to protect the knowledge & ability to mess around with DNA & the Rebels who want it available to most anyone in it's untamed/not knowledgeable glory).  Each has strengths & weaknesses & completely different tactical approaches to not get constantly killed.

Spiderweb Software is just one guy in Seattle who's been doing this (old school RPGs) full time since the mid-90s (best known game is probably the Avernum Saga (six games/continuing chapters set in the same game universe)).  He's been through the trenches & knows what makes a good game.  There's lots of (at times quite funny) reading (he's really sardonic) and your imagination will fill in some of the gaps in the less than modern graphic, but you should enjoy yourself if you get into the story (about 60 hours of game play with lots of replayability).

Being free, it's well worth a couple of hours of your time to see if you like it.

/disclaimer: I've been playing his games for most of those 25+ years & been a beta tester of his for about a decade now
//in fact my current game that I'm playing is the next one in a different series for Spiderweb that will be coming out in August ... but all I can say about that right now is that it's a worthy companion to the first game

What Data Center/World?

Lord Bear: The Steam summer sale was this week.  I hoped to pick up Elden ring, but it wasn't on sale and I rarely buy games at full price.  I picked up 8 other games instead:

I used the Steam Summer Sale to buy the D&D bundle, so I now have the Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate I & II (And Siege of Dragonspear), Icewind Dale, and my favorite game of all-time PlaneScape Torment. This is a big deal, because I've only ever had the originals and have played those for years, but I never had the Enhanced Editions before now. Pretty sure that means I'm going to be playing as The Nameless One again very, very soon.

As to the beat 'em ups, I haven't played many, since until recent revivals like Streets of Rage 4 or TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, it's basically been a dead genre. I'll say my favorite by default, as it's the only one I remember completing the game is the original Double Dragon on the Amiga 500.

Picked up Elex 2, and just getting started. It's fun but the cut scene animation is laughably bad.
I got Borderlands 3 about 2 weeks ago, and am on the second play through. The core gameplay is repetitive, but very fun. Surprisingly, the writing is excellent, and the characters all have compelling backstories.

Picked up Outer Worlds and The Ascent on Steam. Having some fun with the Ascent. Reminds me of old school Contra.

Monster Hunter: Rise just dropped the Sunbreak expansion. So, that's where my limited free time is going to go for the next couple hundred hours. After a couple hundred hours on the switch, I bought the whole deal for PC and I'm much happier with it. Big screen and an actual controller (Stadia) make smashing monsters a lot of fun.

I'm a charge blade main from MH World and the base Rise, but I went with bow this time around and am having fun. Think I'll switch it up and give insect glaive a try here in a bit, once I've farmed up some items.  That's probably the worst part of starting the game over; not having a stupidly massive amount of resources and talismans to just jump into any build I want and give it a try.

Seriously, anybody who likes soulslike games should give MH a try, either World or Rise (or both). There is just sooooooo much to each game.

No D&D this or last week. Went to a baseball game last week and this week is explosions.

Just finished the main quest of Ultimate Alliance 3, probably gonna start the sequel missions over the weekend.

The Ultimate Alliance series (for XBox360) were pretty good beat-em-ups (the second one especially), this later installment is basically the same thing, but somehow feels less. I dunno, like a movie made without awareness of the progress of film in a decade.

// probably start another Skyrim playthrough when I'm done
// anyone have anything better than one of these builds? (I lean towards The Crafter, #7 - also, I prefer to tank, and range/stealth can suck my toes)
