On the one hand, sympathy for the upper middle class laid off so a billionaire can get wealthier by an amount that isn't even a rounding error on his net worth.

On the other hand, the guy in TFA is not sympathetic at all. Yeah, your performance has nothing to do with it. You got laid off, not fired. Your performance reviews are irrelevant.

Second, you didn't see this coming? You're a recruiter at a company with a hiring freezer. On top of that, the specific group you hire for (automated driving) is laying off. Of course you're redundant.

My last company, when they laid people off, just sent them to a last second meeting and then told them to GTFO.  You could come back and get your stuff later.  Immediately, vultures would descend upon the laid off person's cube and start pilfering it.  That was a terrible company and they're defunct now.

At my current company, they tell you that you're being reduced and then give you 2-3 weeks to stay in the office until your last day.  It's never been a problem.  No one has ever shot up the place.  Mostly, we just go to lunch and hang around.  People essentially stop working and start looking for work elsewhere on company resources.  You don't even have to come in.  Some people just leave and don't come back, but they still get paid for 2-3 weeks.  Then you get 2 weeks of severance per year of service up to a year.  So if you worked there for >26 years, you get 52 weeks of severance.

Tesla sounds like my old company.  At least I got a week of severance per year of work plus vacation pay.  My best advice is to start looking for a new job and look for a job that treats you well materially and not a job at some "dream company".  You're not their dream employee, you know.

What's depressing is how abstract basic economic facts are to people who have only known abundance. I think it was back in the 70s when writers started to suggest that affluence had turned people crazy. Well, it has definitely made them stupid.

I worked as a recruiter at Tesla for two months before being laid off on June 17. And I'm not alone - the company is in the process of laying off 10% of salaried employees.

My job was to look for candidates to work on the autopilot self-driving software and on the deep learning team. I live in Austin, Texas, and worked remotely. I really loved my job and ordered two Teslas for myself, which I have since canceled.

On the last day of April, our company's CEO Elon Musk sent out an email saying that we needed to return to the office.

But my understanding was that I would be a fully remote employee since my entire team was remote. I was fully transparent with my manager about my intention to work remotely when I was hired, especially since there wouldn't be anyone to collaborate with or support me if I went into the office. And they shared a lot of my concerns.



This person had a high enough salary to buy *2* Teslas? He worked remotely and didn't want to return to the office? He was only there for 2 months?

Of COURSE, he was the first to get let go. That's how layoffs work. New guys with big salaries that no one knows or has met get the ax first. Start hanging out with your management team at your next job. Welcome to the party, pal, indeed.

I bought a Tesla but Elon's heel turn to becoming a bond villain has been pretty eye opening. I put up with his insanity early on thinking it was the result of lack of sleep coupled with overworking, but it turns out he's just an asshole.

My next car will be an EV but will not be a Tesla. He's pretty stupid for pissing off his customer base. Who the fark does he think buys his cars? The only quasi-reasonable thing I can think of is that he's trying to appeal to the redneck pickup truck demographic or something, so he can sell his Cybertruck.

Either way, yeah my Tesla will be my last. There are too many decent options out there today.

I worked at a top heavy company that started to circle the drain. Re-org every 6 months with layoffs in between. First year they offered severance packages that caused all the senior techs pack their shiat and go work somewhere else. Then it became a game of musical chairs where your performance made no difference because you barely knew who your supervisor was and your KPI's were going to be irrelevant in 3 months.
/ Year three I told my boss, he shuld let me go in the next round

I disagree with this - the layoffs are not so a billionaire can save some money.

Tesla needs to cuts costs ASAP because the factories in Austin and Berlin are "money furnaces" that are losing billions of dollars.  Kinda sounds like Tesla is completely farked.

/Or Elon is engaging in stock manipulation by lying about financial conditions in order to tank the stock so he can get back in for cheap

The guy was a recruiter and Tesla had announced layoffs AND a hiring freeze. I'm sure it must have occured to him that his services might be unneeded for the foreseeable future.

If laying me off will save the company money, do it. It's a job, not a charity. If my efforts produce so less value than my salary+cost of keeping me as an employee....I don't want that job.


I went in for an interview along with the best programmer in the office. They offered me the job. It was very satisfying to tell them that if they had offered both of us I'd have accepted but since they didn't recognize that the other guy was (miles) better than me, I couldn't take the job. This wasn't self-deprecation. It was realism.

The company didn't last 2 years after that. So, for once I was right about something.

Sasquach: Oh you poor baby. Work is hard. Business is hard. Think it's all kittens and rainbows to run a business? Start your own.

As an employee, you're compensated for your work. The end. You're mostly insulated from any pain the business is going through. Meet a nice girl and want to run away to be with her? Go for it, you don't owe the company anything. Your services are no longer needed? A good employer will recognize your value and try to find a place for you...you are not, however, entitled to that.
