There's a limit to how much companies can raise prices WITHOUT RAISING THE AVERAGE WAGE.

Sorry corps, you're going to have to cut into that sweet sweet margin.

Unless there's a law: no there isn't. It's bullshiat, but it's true.

Luckily, the UK has a SLIGHTLY better chance of a law being passed to check unfettered greed than we do in the US. Only slightly, though. We ARE talking about the country that voted to leave the EU because xenophobia, lies, and blue passports after all.

I remember when Tesco announced they  would come to the USA. Not as Fresh and Easy but 100% Tesco. They bragged they have all these databases and analysis predictions or whatever and know exactly what and how much to order in each store and will crush our chains.

Fresh and Easy was Tesco (just with a different name), as far as I can tell.  But they did literally everything wrong.  No, seriously, here's the list:

1. Americans don't shop like Brits-they buy in bulk and load up the SUV, so you have to provide larger package sizes.

2. In America, shrink wrapped produce isn't see as sanitary; it's seen as processed.

3. Going for a hippie organic vibe clashed with having mainly high tech self serve checkouts.

4. The stores were too big to be convenience stores but too small to be true supermarkets.

5. A lot of their stores were built at the very edge of town, where all the planned housing developments were going to be-the ones that were all canceled due to the 2008 housing crash.

Every time a name brand raises the price to save their bottom line without care and concern for their consumers they effectively advertise for their competitors. So yes, you're right, there is not law saying they can't drive their business into the ground.  If they want to survivethey should probably go down a different path.
