The most probable explanation is a meteor struck the atmosphere and exploded before it hit the ground, so, yes, it was of alien origin.

I really enjoyed this novel that says the event was caused by a sub-atomic black hole, and that it's still buried deep in the earth and could be the solution to our energy needs, unless it is found by nefarious actors bent on global domination.

Russia likes its space rocks

Few years back, Jon Stewart had a video of a space rock and went on to explain Russians like dash cams to  protect them from slip n fall scammers, helicopters and jets taking off from the highway and merging tanks.

Did it simply skim the atmosphere and exit?

Hiroshima was pretty small as nukes go. I guess it doesn't sound as impressive to say "about the same energy as the Castle Bravo test on Bikini Atoll"

I wish he would start writing novels again.... looking at Wikipedia he's hardly written anything in over 20 years. What is it? Writers block?

Looking at the synopsis of Earth, they both feature a micro black hole in the Earth, but I'm going to say No. (Haven't read it, though, so I won't judge.)

Now that's an interesting What If. What if Tesla had seen the approach of the meteor and tested one of this toys on it? Not at all likely, but it's a scenario I hadn't imagined before.

I like the phrase "1,000 times more powerful than Hiroshima" because it sounds stupidly powerful, until you realize the Ruskies themselves exploded a singular bomb over 3x as powerful as this event as a fark you to the West.

Thermonuclear weapons are just so cool.
