Now this is actually a cool story. Needed to read something good today.

I would imagine at 100, that first pitch isn't making it all the way from the mound.

He was on the Shoshone, which was one of the transports carrying the 2nd Marine Division to Okinawa.  The division was supposed to feign a landing on the southern part of the island, then reinforce 1st Marines and Tenth Army from the primary landing sites on the northern end several days later.

But the two spearheads of Tenth Army, XXX Amphibious Corps and XXIV Corps, took the northern half of the island relatively quickly.  With combat shifting to the narrow confines of the central isthmus, the 2nd Marines weren't needed.  So the Shoshone and other transports off-loaded a few supplies and took all their Marines back to Saipan.

Chief Kinyon got to witness something unique in the Pacific Theater - Marines being told they weren't needed and were headed back to rear area.  For some of the new guys, it must have been disappointing to not get a chance to fight.  But for others, the ones that had to wade across Tarawa Lagoon, I'm sure it was a bit of a relief.

Bet he would strike out less than Javy Baez.
