I lived in glenwood until I was six. Nice place if you like country living.

One tent on 90 acres of land sounds pretty reasonable

He biggest worry is that the Big Island is getting a lot stricter about permits than they used to be and a Airbnb like this would never pass permitting.  She can probably get around that by moving it around and calling it a temporary structure.

My housies have been renting camping space on the property we're on. It's close to the water, and it's cleared for big tents and the firepit and picnic tables and lawn furniture make it very comfy, and close enough to the highway folks can call ahead if they're traveling on a long road trip.

It's nice enough that they often get two or three families rolling in. And it's damn cheap to avoid getting a hotel or using an RV court.

Well the way capitalism is going everyone who is not a 1%er should work on their camping skills.

/ or this ends the way most monopoly games end, with yelling and somebody kicking the board over.

You're missing the point, subby. See, she did something and is now making money at it. This makes her different from other people who aren't making money, with the difference being that she is a "doer" and they are not. She should be an inspiration to you, not a subject for silly contrivances like "fact checking" and "math." Those are the sorts of things that have no place except to serve as unwelcome distractions in these sorts of articles published on news agencies whose primary and critical function is to continuously fellate all members of the investor and Wall Street class, so that they do not build up so much stress that they are unable to focus on creating the institutional wealth that will someday rain down on all citizens like manna from Heaven.

Late-stage capitalism is just like Monopoly except that even once one person has all the money and property and everybody else is broke and miserable, you have to carry on playing.

Yep, generational wealth.

It's probably from all the extra cleaning fees.

If she sets up 4 more tents, she'll be Hawaiian middle class.

That might get her an honorary haole status on her passport so she can emigrate to the mainland.

2022-06-29 7:05:34 PM
$70 a night, plus a $100 cleaning fee for her to come in and sweep the dirt out of the tent and spritz the outhouse seat with Lysol.

Indigenous wealth? Her family probably has ties long before white man showed up.

Living in f*coming Hawaii.

We travelled to Deadwood before SD went Deep GQP MAGA Red, when the show was on HBO. We got to know some of the regulars, and one was amazed and envious that we were "so close" to the ocean, being from the Mid-Atlantic.

Are most indiginous Hawaiians wealthier than the white settlers? Seems unlikely, since the land was grabbed and the royalty deposed.

Number one travel destination for Hawaiians for a long time was Las Vegas. That might still be true.

More to the point, if she is spending 15 hours a week, with let's say about 2 or 3 clean up sessions minimum, how much travel is she doing? She has mobility somewhere between a  dairy owner and a part time fast food worker.

And as subby said, it works out to 400 days a year. Yeah. Something is not adding up.

But wait! There's more. She is probably looking at taxes, regulatory problems, zero depreciation because TENT, liability, etc.

CNBC is really doing some heavy lifting here to make this look like a great deal for her. And it is not like she can just add another tent because people are paying for the "nature."

I predict that she will get tired of this one way or another. Or she has her gig and will just enjoy her life in paradise. I see a lot of cats in her future.

By the way , and I feel this is important enough for a second post , I *adore* Hawai'i . It's a beautiful place. When I became homeless, I almost bought a one way ticket there , as I felt that I should at least die penniless someplace nice. I'm a big fan of nature. It's a damn shame that so much has been developed. And I was always hoping to run into a certain Farker who was a letter carrier and by him a beer.

But to her, it represents independence - and the money she earns helps her spend more time traveling.

Farking twits.  Making the world a sadder and more damaged place.

You're thinking about it all wrong.

Own a home in the projects?  Airbnb as an 'authentic low income experience'.

Guaranteed to make money.

15 hours per week x 52 weeks ... Works out to about $35 an hour for this part-time job that required previous experience, 3/10 of the average yearly income in set-up costs and an inheritance of valuable real estate to achieve. I have zero problem with her individual actions here. I wish her luck. It seems unlikely I'll get to Hawaii but a luxury tent with a king size bed and WiFi during the rainy season sounds lovely in a short stay way.

You're forgetting the 30 dollar a day 'resort' fee. Parking, cleaning and bathroom/shower access. And triple fee for weekends and holidays. And WiFi because there's no cell service there.

A) Generational wealth, so f*ck off.

B) Not even gonna read the article but I'm guessing she had a few good months and they extrapolate that out to $28k+ a year if that was the trend year-round.

C) These articles are a plague.

are there tax breaks for those born on the island?  How can $25k cover the annual taxes on 9 acres in Hawaii?

I could see her running into government regulations about either hotel permits, or owning a camp ground.  Either one requires code sanitation facilities.

Wait til she gets some crappy renters like our last few airbnb groups have been. Loud, disrespectful, entitled, and dont give a damn about the property or its caretakers.
