I remember people thinking it was just absurdly nerdy that I'd be playing chess or cribbage on my PalmPilot in 1998 or Axim in 2003.  And then, much less than ten years later, that was literally the most normal thing I could be doing.

The pace of that period boggles the mind.  The timeframe from "grayscale Pilot is amazing, dialup is life" to "We've all but invented wifi, I have a wifi enabled device in my pocket, and can expect it to be working at at least DSL speeds in every coffee shop" was about... 5 years?  And the iPhone was at the tail end of that wave. The last five years in that space?  I know plenty of people with iPhone 7/8s.

Oh the wailing and the gnashing of teeth over the fact it was locked to AT&T.  And that you couldn't install your own software.  And the cost.  And the battery life. So much wailing.  It was bound to fail, or at best appeal to a tiny section of Apple fanboys.

And I've still never owned one. Blackberry until the first gen Motorola Droid, then an assortment of HTC and Motorola phones, currently using an aging Pixel 3A XL. I'll probably switch back to Moto after this since they tend to have more storage/SD card slots.

I really don't have anything against iPhones. I just got used to Android and have never seen any reason to switch, especially since nothing I own digitally is in Apple's ecosystem.

2007 was peak Mac-bashing, but anyone who wasn't anti-Mac knew the iPhone would be the cell phone done right. APPL was the best investment I ever made.

I would have believed you if you'd said AAPL.

Every single one still worked when I switched. During that time I went through countless Android phones for work. It's why, despite all the flaws and silliness, I stick with Apple 😕

It has been 22 years since compaq/hp started the whole handheld "iDevice" paradigm with their iPaq pocket pc/pdas. Apple jumped on the iDevice bandwagon many years later, subby, by adding telecom capability to their own line of iDevices - although people had been connecting their iDevices to phones for a long time before that.

My plampilot can still do most of its work as a PDA (and lasts more than a month on its batteries).  My blackberry still does everything I need it to do.  The plampilot can sync with the blackberry.  I have more iCrap devices that are now useless and expensive landfill.
