(Fark)   Hi Fark craftsman/artisans (fartisans?). I'm looking for a custom-made wooden box for my anniversary and wondering if anyone is up for a commission, or knows someone who is? DIT   (fark.com) divider line

Hi all, It's my 5th anniversary coming up and apparently that's the one where you give a gift of wood* so I thought I'd get my wife a custom box** for tea.

It's relatively simple, I think, just a 9" x 12" box with some built-in containers for tea/sugar and a hole for holding her thermos, a drawer, and some personlization if possible.

On Etsy I've just found pre-made boxes with like woodburned initials or other personalization, which isn't enough, I need this to be built to spec.

I figure some of you have the skills in case anyone is interested, or might know of someone who does this sort of thing.

Thanks in advance.

When does it need to be in your hands?
What state do you live in?

I'd reconsider. No matter what you do, it's still a box with little compartments for holding a selection of tea bags.
You can fancy it up but it'll still come across as one of things you see in the breakfast nook next to the waffle maker in the lobby of a embassy suites.

Just for information. To build and finish a small custom box out of mahogany or teak (traditional tea box) is going to take a craftsman  40+ hours plus materials and don't know anyone that I consider a craftsman for less than $1,000. Look at antique tea boxes, the UK has some good antique sites that will ship a very nice one for around $500. If price is no object I can put up a portfolio of a person that may do it but his simple walnut tables start at $10k.

Sounds like a great gift. Wood is a great medium. A darker wood like walnut would pair well with what you're looking for, but it's a little pricy. Cherry is pretty cheap and might be right in with the aesthetic.

Okay...go with a basic wood jewelry box. But get a 'petrified' wood pendant.

Also throw in an envelope with tickets to whatever 'Broadway' touring company visits your town.
Hamilton, Dear Evan Hanson, Kinkyboots ...etc. Or something else she might like for a 'datenight' with a ticket.

Cool that you're doing the traditional gifts (I also do that)!

If I were you, I'd look up a local cabinet maker and ask for his help. For my own wood anniversary, I had an anniversary card made of wood (with metal hinges). The cabinet maker has all the tools and can sand, stain, etc.

Get one of these instead of a tea box; you can personalize the inside:

/no association with makers

This is sweet but I echo other farkers above who said something to the effect of "it's not going to be cheap"

Unless you're paying a custom woodworker less than 5$ an hour, you're going to be shocked at the price tag.

What's in the box?!

Hi! Woodworker here who started his career 20 years ago as a professional luthier. This is definitely something I could build for you. Contrary to what someone posted upthread, there's no way this should take 40 hours and cost you $1000. That's what I do for a guitar, and boxes are somewhat easier.

If you go to sawdustworkshop.com you'll find some examples of what I do and contact info. I don't think any of my boxes are on there, but I'd be happy to send pics of previous builds. Anyway, I love custom work, so if you've thought this out enough to have specs and measurements, we can make this happen.

For my friend I got a nice wood box from Pier One and put tree seeds in it.  That was 30 years ago and now she has a lovely little forest.
