Yeah, this was on the beek subreddit yesterday. 200 hives, which is over 10,000,000 million bees. What was upsetting was that they weren't going to allow any recovery attempts, just douse the bees with gasoline, which is fatal. Allowing area beekeepers in to recover as much as they can costs nothing, but would have required closing the road for a couple of hours, and we can't have that.

The 5% the one guy quoted refers to the hive boxes, frames, brood, and honey. A good beekeeper can sort through, looking for the Queen (most have a painted dot on them to make spotting easier). Find the queen, put her in a nuc box, and her surviving workers will swarm to her. Then you can put them in a fresh hive.

There were a lot of upset people, so they allowed the beekeepers in to save what they could.
