TFG is just cheap if it requires spending his own money. An actual billionaire wouldn't have cheaped out.

TFG is cheap, true. But the place settings are entirely paid for by a nonprofit: the White House Historical Society.

In the article it said the association wasn't going to pay for what Mel picked out. Likely it was supposed to be ordered thru a trump company instead of traditional China producer.

Throw some empty cardboard from McDonalds in there next to the fine china.
It's the only thing appropriate.

If that's true, he missed out on a great grift.  Have you any idea how many of those f*cking yahoos would send him hundreds of dollars instead of buying food for their kids, if their donation got them a collector plate of real White House china?

shiat, I'm amazing they haven't done it anyway.

Melania sat on the photocopier and they had the Franklin Mint screen print the result on some Corelle seconds from the outlet mall.

They need to make them like the prop bottles and plates that are designed to smash.  That way Don can get a satisfying crash even with his weak throwing arm.

I wonder if the staff knew they had to scotchguard the walls and ceiling?

From TFA:  Trump most commonly opted to borrow place settings from the official Clinton china set for her White House events, the two Trump-hosted state dinners included. There are 300-place settings of apropos ornate, shiny gold plates and dishware selected by Hillary Clinton when she was first lady.

You just can't make this shiat up.  A TV writer pitching like this would have been rejected for being way too cliché.

I disagree on that. The New Jersey Devils have two billionaire primary owners and because of their penny pinching, it has been very rare that the team's combined player salaries rise much beyond league minimum, and are usually the lowest in the league if not the lowest (which they were for two years in a row until 2021-22). Billionaires can be cheap on their luxury purchases, but still demand the best for minimum money.

Well the Devils just inherently suck. It's in their DNA. THey only win with The Trap and with Cousinfarker in net. Since neither of those work anymore, they're screwed.

Well other than your obvious Rags bias, the reason why the Devils suck these days is because the owners are cheap.

The Tampa Bay Lightning wouldn't have been looking to win a third Stanley Cup in a row in FLORIDA, if the owners held back about $10 million dollars on player salary. I get excuses from fellow fans who tow the billionaires' line that they are waiting for "the right time", well it's been 9 years and they haven't pulled the trigger on anyone major except to get the team above the Salary Floor so we aren't penalized. Thanks to the frugalness of our two billionaire owners, the team consists of a bunch of called up AHL players and about three  high cost contracts of players that will sell tickets, sweaters and other memorabilia (P.K. Subban would be the fourth, but his contract expired).

I'm sure this comes as a serious disappointment to Republicans in both red and blue states, who had been planning to order them for outdoor use.  In the blue states, the moneyed "rod and gun club" set would have loved these for a round of "sporting clays," while in the red states, they'd have been perfect for setting up on a fence post and plinking.  There's a certain satisfying sound fine china makes when it shatters, that you just can't get from anything else.

I'll bet anything that's the zinger.

The Trump Cartel saw the china order as just another way to grift money, so order something super-expensive through a subsidiary that they own and pocket most of the money, while getting some really cheap knockoffs in return.

The historical society footing the bill saw through that scam and refused to pay, and when told they'd have to pick from a conventional supplier and not a Trump front, they lost interest.
