"By doing so, it will hopefully discourage other elected officials, those who put their left hand on the Bible and raised their right hand in communities across North Carolina, to not do anything like this again," Folwell said in a phone interview with Carolina Public Press last week.

If putting a hand on the Bible doesn't keep you from breaking your oath, then what good is it to expect you to do so?

Sounds like a regional power grab.  Maybe they can make a BBC series about it.

This is the rural South, so I'm just going to assume there's a racial aspect to who's getting shut down and who's gathering the spoils.

/Y'all have a reputation, ya hear?

First they get farked over by their Finance Officer, now they get farked over by the County. It's almost like someone's got it in for the people that live there...

Sorry raceturbaitors, but Easy Larinburg is 66% white, and 99% English speaking.

They're quite poor though.

Apparently the first time you embezzle is a gimme.

Yeah, if you misuse funds the punishment will be dissolving the town. You personally will be fine.

I'm sure that'll learn them

And there are only 300 of them. Why is this even an incorporated community?

/ per capita income $13415. Probably get real ticked off when anyone starts talking about white privilege

No true Scotsman would embezzle town funds.

This sort of thing DOES happen, you see it more often when a city can no longer manage its schools, or when a law enforcement division is found out and the state has to step in.  I'm failing to remember the name of the town in Texas that is constantly teetering, and I apologize for that as it would help paint a picture.

Obviously this one article can't supply all the details that we would like and I would like to read them.  I don't see a conspiracy, but I do see room for bad actors.  Going unincorporated removes Enough institutions that bad actors can take advantage.  Let's hope for the best, and perhaps a follow up.

"Originally known as Scotland Village, it became incorporated as East Laurinburg in 1909 as a way for the new Waverly Mill to avoid paying property taxes to neighboring Laurinburg." source

Why are we touching the bible when we become elected officials again?

Or the mom/daughter team were caught skimming money after someone at the state finally noticed they hadn't filed their audits since 2016.  Someone really should have attached a link to that information.

Sounds like a good reason to emancipate all the people of the town from having local representation.

Yeah, I have no idea how that segment of civics works. How exactly do you incorporate a patch of land into a town?

It differs quite radically from state to state.

Wikipedia says the population is a mere 295 people. Which is too small to deserve to exist as a municipality IMO.

Over 80% white.
