I don't know anything about him but it would be great to have someone to run against DeSantis because DeSantis  will beat Trump in the primary (if Trump even runs) and has a real shot at winning the general.

In any case, DeSantis will eventually be President in the next election or the one after unless he's found with a dead girl or a live boy. And even then there's a non-zero chance.

Well this is certainly interesting. If nothing else its useful to have another national star-level figure on the national stage and showing up in DeathSantis's backyard.

If Trump runs and loses the primary he's going to tear the Republican party apart.

That is an optimistic predicament. We've been saying that the republicans patch would fall apart for a while now and it's still not happens.

You should trade mark that saying. Think of the money you could make putting that on hats, shirts, etc. if it does become Florida vs California.

/I want 5% of all sales for the suggestion.

Pretty obvious he's going to run for governor of Florida. Maybe get back together with Ferngully

I have met him several times in a professional setting and outside of that.
Do I agree with everything he does, no, but the guy has had to master a balancing act of give and take her in the worlds 5th largest economy.
I have friends that live near him and I have had backyard conversations with Newsom.
I did not get a line of political b.s. from him, rather a welcomed sense of honesty when he said that in his job, everyday you are turning over a rock, and there is something else.

There has been an inordinate amount of anti-California bashing (propaganda) for the past decade from other states (namely from Florida, Texas, etc.) Unfortunately, propaganda works and it does have an effect on how California is perceived. For example, have you notice random people saying California is "far-left", "Highest taxes ever", "needle-infested", "bad for business", "mass exodus", etc. etc.?  None of this is remotely as bad (most are not true at all) as it's portrayed, but the perception remains due to the propaganda. I see this just as likely him returning the favor to help improve the perception of California nationally and counter the constant negative propaganda.

Or, he could be thinking of running for President.

/I'm not a mind reader, after all.

How? They may not like it but his base is so fanatical that they'll still vote for DeSantis over any democrat. Unless you mean Trump would run as an independent. That would fracture the GOP but Trump would have to know that he can't win that way and I don't think he could handle losing again.

Seems a viable candidate if that's what he wants to do. There's certainly some weaknesses regarding how his state can have such a massive budget surplus but can't seem to find a way to competently combat core issues there like homelessness.

But he's got the face and the fundraising chops.

2022-06-28 3:33:22 PM
He is 54, so we're starting to get some younger blood, governor of a huge state with a large economy...isn't that basically how Reagan got elected? I don't know enough to know if there are some skeletons in his closet, but what I do know so far, seems good.

Of course, he will draw the ire of the Reich because CALIFORNIA SOCIALIZUMZ! He seems like a solid choice at this point, I am curious who he would pluck as his VP since Harris has been...and that could help solidify people around him depending on who he selects for that role.

Newsom?
Didn't he veto a bill giving California citizens a college education?
Keeps forgiving the power company for burning down the state because making them fix wires would cost money?

If he is, that's great news. The Dems need someone good for two terms who has shown he can govern.

It wouldn't be for losing, it would be for retribution. He's petty af, and running Independent would make so much grift money he could ride out his days counting it. The more I think about it, the more likely that scenario seems. He won't really have to worry about the stress of being POTUS, he will be able to just do rallies with no need to even consider debating. He will control large swaths of angry voters. Running as a third candidate is a really good option for him.

Master trolling.  He's got a $100 BILLION surplus and is giving everyone a tax rebate check.  They should buy some more windmills, solar farms, and desalination plants.

THIS.  Based upon the hearings today and his tweets, he's in meltdown mode.  Even Fox News has some of his "unflattering escapades" on their site.  If he doesn't end up in prison, I imagine that he'll run, if only to salvage his ego, put off further charges/bankruptcies, etc... and it will be a brutal fight in MAGADome and whomever makes it out will most likely lack that GOP-greased-pig-shine.  In that event, Newsom could win.

But ordinarily, cornhole America doesn't go for Cali politicians.  Even though CA has a lot to brag about in terms of GDP, budget surplus, Covid response history, still, stigginit is tough to break through.

There is zero chance Newsom loses his election this year.

I don't know how he'd do running for president, but he's certainly a competent governor, which is more than I can say for anyone in the GQP.  (Maaaaaabye the governors of Massachusetts and Maryland could sneak in just over that extremely low bar.)  He's popular, and he managed the state well when the big crisis hit, despite Republicans losing their minds over... well, everything.

People who attack him tend to go with vague insults, the kind they threw at Hillary.  "Corporate" or whatever other meaningless descriptors there are.

Petty insults thrown by right wingers aside, Newsom saved quite a few Californian lives with his handling of the pandemic, which is something governors don't often get to say.  He's the sort of executive I'd trust in a crisis.

You know, the opposite of DeSantis.

Yeah, I guess it would just come down to what he'll want more. Stiggin' it or not having to go through losing again. As you suggested, he never actually wanted to be President, which makes his meltdown over losing all the more telling. He had a breakdown over losing a job he didn't even want. Can he mentally and physically handle that again, even if it's calculated? I dunno. I can't even say for sure who would be worse as POTUS, him or DeSantis.

Newsom is rather progressive. He did allow same-sex marriage in SF, in City Hall no less, before any other state or city did so.
