So, can the defense treat it's own witness as hostile?

/I want to read about the defense objecting to the answer to one of it's own questions from it's own witness.

Sure.  If the witness has testimony that would help the defendant, but has reason to not want to help the defendant, the defense can call them up, have them declared a hostile witness, and grill them, getting the evidence the defense wants.

Objections would be from the prosecutor.  You don't object because the attorney is being mean.  You object because the question breaks the rules of procedure.  It would be the prosecutor's job to police the defense attorney's questioning.  And that happens even if the witness is not hostile.  If you ask your compliant witness a no-no question, the other side will object, even though it is your witness.  Like if you ask your witness about something that is hearsay, you are not going to object to that - but the other lawyer will.

But what would the point be? Would the defense rile up the kid and say to the jury "this kid is obviously crazy and incompetent, there's nothing the parents could do w/ such an obvious demon seed." That makes a fraction more sense than this:

Look, I'm pretty sure my initial comment proved I ain't one of those law-talkin' guys, I just want to have the amusement of the defense shooting themselves in the foot, but I also want to see their face between pulling the trigger and the bullet impacting.

Maybe they'll call him as an expert on mass shootings?

If the kid listens to his own lawyer there will be a lot of "I plead the Fif".

I was hoping for this particular deep cut.  Not one of the more well known MST3k's but great none the less.

Can you bring an attorney to object for you?  Or just signal you from the audience to not answer that question?

Can we just skip to executing all of them as terrible farking human beings?

The family tree clearly needs some harsh pruning.

Oh this will not work out well for any of them.

Yeah he will further incriminate himself on the stand or they are going to look worse. Or both. If they had any sense they would plea bargain for probation and community service if they can. Any jury will look and say you put guns into his hands. You are guilty.

Plus since this happened we had Uvalde and more mass shootings. You giving a gun to a kid who did a school shooting is looking worse by the day. You will be a scape goat for all these school shootings and will be made an example of. Your dumb ass kid will be made an example of.

let me give you all some shovels so you can further deepen that hole.

What klan member is the school administrator or football coach/gang leader?

I have to to wonder if the parents are going to try to throw their own kid under the bus to save themselves.  Unless the kid intends to "take one for the team"  and ruins his own defense to try to save his parents i struggle to see how this could help at all.

IIRC, following the shooting and the kid's arrest, didn't they promptly abandon him in jail and run off to hide?

They're throwing their kid under the bus. I don't feel Ethan himself has enough empathy to want to 'save' them.

If he's as bad as one of my kids, he will demonstrate that while he has the right to remain silent, he lacks the ability to do so.  He'll talk so much and about nothing that the court reporter will need a tag team.

The kid's in a strong position to bribe them. "Sure, I'll testify. Buy me another gun".

Signal, no.

Can they object, yes. Can a witness have an attorney of their own, yes, at least in Michigan.

I've done quite a few depositions before (only one court appearance, though), mostly people who sued after they were injured, and I never walk into the deposition without my attorney present.

They can't direct you not to answer during testimony, but they can object to the question or line of questioning.

Technically they can say "I have directed my client to not answer that question", but you can still answer the question if you choose.

Well the moment their kid was arrested, the parents tried to leave the state. So they obviously didn't have any qualms about abandoning him. So trying to throw him under the bus to save themselves is definitely in play here.

State, hell.

Country. They were found not far from the Ambassador Bridge, which gets you to Windsor.

In fact, that's one of the things that got them caught. Couple white people acting suspicious in the warehouse area of town late at night.
