But those voters sent a message!

And I assumed this was going to be Trump's kid talking about Obama dunking all over Trump at the correspondent's dinner and how that led to the end of Roe.

Yes, let's continue to blame the left for the centrists farking us over for 50 years.

lol... that was last vestige of the Southern Democrats as a powerful voting bloc. You would have bought the seat for 6 more years, maybe, but they would have taken it in the next election.

But, sure... that was it. The was the one thing.

Huddleston was known as a member of the moderate wing of the Democratic Party, as was typical of party members from Kentucky

He's the perfect Saint for Fark Moderates from his Courier Post Obit
He opposed abortion and supported a Reagan-backed constitutional amendment supporting voluntary school prayer.

They mostly just switched over to the Republican Party.... they were Republicans pretty much... but it allowed the Democrats to have control of Congress for a longgggggggggg time.

Don't underestimate the writer's strike's role in creating a cheap "reality tv" platform that ended up killing a million Americans and ending Roe v Wade.

2022-06-28 9:00:35 AM
While the left has been spending the last several decades fighting GOP supreme court nominations tooth and nail the center has shrugged and assured us Roe would never be overturned.

Centrists are as incapable of self-reflection as MAGA voters.

Yes, it was THAT election in 1984 that doomed abortion rights.

Not when Ford pardoned Nixon (opening the door for consequence-free politics); not when Reagan used hostages as bargaining chips to beat Carter; not when Republicans, using a statute they just-so-happened to find unConstitutional the very month after they no longer needed it, harangued Clinton over a losing real estate deal until some sexual harassment fell out; not when SCOTUS handed the Presidency to the guy who lost by 500,000 votes; and not when the last 3 SCOTUS nominees - the last 5 Republican nominees, really - baldly lied about Roe and abortion to the most credulous idiots ever to serve in the Senate (not just Manchin and Collins).

It was one election 40 years ago, and just ignore everything since.

// you didn't lose on that one last-second call
// you lost on a dozen or two breaks during the game that didn't go your way

Look at how many votes Jill Stein got in each state and then look at how many Clinton lost by.

He also was anti-immigrant and lost his seat primarily because of absenteeism from his Senate duties.   No wonder Fark Moderates love him.

Obama defeated Jack Ryan in a 2004 Senate Race because of embarrassing information that came out from his divorce.  Jack Ryan was the husband of Jeri Ryan who played 7 of 9 on Star Trek Voyageur.

Obama's Senate victory paved for his nomination and subsequent Presidential win in 2008.

Associated racist sentiment and Trump birtherism lead to Obama's scathing roasting of Trump at the 2011 White House Correspondents' dinner.  This caused Trump to run and win the 2016 Presidential election which in turn allowed him to appoint 3 right-wing Supreme Court Justices.

A heavily right-wing court overturned Roe v. Wade.  So the butterfly effect is that women lost the right to abortion because 7 of 9 refused to have sex with other men in an adult night club.

After Watergate Republicans regrouped a contested every election. Dog catcher, library board and school board. This created a farm team for state and then national elections. Republican voters vote in every election, referendum and town meeting.

Want to change Dobbs or Heller then vote. Every time. Not just when you can draw a straight line to your issue but every time.

Green voters aren't Democrats

The Socialist Worker's Party are not Democrats

Look up their political message, you'd understand why very few people who would vote for these candidates could potentially be convinced to vote Democrat. Fark needs to remember there's a greater diversity of politics in this country besides Democrat and Christian Fascist

There's no guarantee those socialists would have voted for Democrats (or voted at all).  They could have just as easily voted for McConnell to stick it to the Dems.

I find it hilarious how both of the big parties try to blame any loss on 3rd parties like a bunch of children who feel entitled to those votes.

How about you try to find out why those people didn't vote for you and consider adjusting your actions to accommodate them?

How about you recognize the game you are playing in order to have a chance at winning it? It's no use pretending we don't have a "winner-takes-all" voting system for congress and the senate.

If you don't like the game, run for office on the platform of changing it.

Eh, once you've gone this far back, the counterfactuals are infinite.

I can tell you Gerald Ford suffering one too many concussions leading him to pardon Nixon led us to this situation.  And it might even be true.

Sure, it's easy to say Huddleston could have won if he had those extra 7,696 votes, but it's just as easy to say that Welters could have won if he had those extra 639,721 votes. And either of them could have won if they had McConnell's 644,990 votes. And even I could have won if I had the total of the 1,292,407 votes. You could also conjecture that if no one had voted, no one would have won. Furthermore if everyone had voted anyone could have won.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't care about whatever talking point this is.

Are the abortion legal states going to end up like the weed legal states with the towns/cities on the border getting rich from all the people crossing state lines to pick up a quarter bag of abortion?

Yeah, pretty much every hardcore Trumper I know in red states who is boomer and older claims they were a Democrat at some point.

So let's get this straight. We're blaming the fall of roe on an election from 40 years ago because a socialist spoiler "cost" a conservative Democrat the election.

But we're not blaming the Democratic president from 14 years ago who had a supermajority in the Senate, who promised to codify Roe, and the reneged after being elected.

Sure.
